GOLF RULES…The Royal and Ancient Golf Club, and the United States Golf Association, have undertaken a major rewrite of the Rules of Golf – the first since 1744.
USGA rules outreach and regulations official Joe Foley says the process started five years ago. He says the current rulebook is too complicated for the average player.
Foley says a window for public comment remains open through late summer. That input will be reviewed, final rule adjustments made, and the new rules announced in 2018, for play in 2019.
He says as times, and technology, change some rules have become outdated.
Foley says if rules are made simpler, the game will be more approachable for new players. He says golf, as we know it, will remain the same.
Foley says some changes may help improve pace of play.
The revisions drop the number of rules from 34 to 24 – and eliminate some violations, and penalties.
The revisions, and a link for public comments, may be found at usga.com.
