WRESTLING SEEDING…This weekend’s state wrestling tournaments in Sioux Falls will feature the debut of seeding each weight class.

Under the formula, the top eight are seeded through data from track wrestling-dot-com which stores results throughout the season. The top eight are seeded, while the remaining eight are drawn at random. Wrestlers from the same region still can’t meet in the first round.

Huron head coach Dan McCarty is not a fan, saying there’s too many variables during the season that aren’t factored.

McCarty says there’s nothing wrong with the old system.

The combined Class A and B tournament begins Friday at the Premier Center in Sioux Falls.

WRESTLING DAD BANNED… A Pennsylvania man has sued to overturn a ban that could keep him from attending his son’s high school wrestling tournaments at a rival school.

Liberty High School in Bethlehem sent Ken Fenstermacher a letter barring him from its gymnasium for unspecified “offensive behavior” during a Feb. 2 match.

Liberty is set to host an individual district tournament starting Friday, and the Northeast Regional Tournament on March 3. Fenstermacher’s son, K.J., is a senior wrestler from Northampton Area High School, but previously attended Liberty and wrestled in grades 9-11.

A Northampton County judge has scheduled a hearing at which Liberty must “show cause” why Fenstermacher should still be banned from Liberty’s gym.

Fenstermacher had a harassment charge dismissed after he apologized for allegedly shoving a Bethlehem Catholic coach in 2014, while his son wrestled for Liberty.

HUSKERS COACH…Nebraska receivers coach Keith Williams was sentenced Wednesday to 30 days in jail, three years’ probation and fined $1,000 after pleading no contest to third-offense drunken driving.

Williams is to report to jail on March 3, but a Lancaster County judge said Williams could apply for house arrest. Prosecutors requested that Williams go to jail because he never did time for previous DUI convictions. Williams’ driver’s license also has been revoked for five years, but he can apply for an ignition interlock after 45 days.

Williams was in his Chevrolet Camaro when he rear-ended an Uber driver’s vehicle about 1:50 a.m. on Aug. 14 in downtown Lincoln. Williams’ blood-alcohol was measured at 0.15 percent, nearly double the legal limit.

Coach Mike Riley suspended Williams for the first four games in 2016.

PITCHLESS WALKS…The players’ association has agreed to Major League Baseball’s proposal to have intentional walks without pitches this year.

While the union has resisted many of MLB’s proposed innovations, players are willing to accept the intentional walk change.

“As part of a broader discussion with other moving pieces, the answer is yes,” union head Tony Clark wrote Wednesday in an email to The Associated Press. “There are details, as part of that discussion, that are still being worked through, however.”

The union’s decision was first reported by ESPN .

Agreement with the union is required for playing rules changes unless MLB gives one year advance notice, in which case it can unilaterally make alterations. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed hope Tuesday that ongoing talks would lead to an agreement on other changes but also said clubs would reserve the right to act unilaterally, consistent with the rule-change provision of the sport’s labor contract.

UCONN FACILITES…The University of Connecticut is moving forward with plans to build new athletic facilities for its soccer, baseball and softball teams.

The school’s board of trustees has approved spending $4.75 million dollars to design the school’s “Athletic District,” where the fields will be located.

UConn has estimated the project could cost up to $46 million. It is $15 million into a campaign to raise $25 million from donors.

The difference will be made up through a planned surcharge on hockey, soccer, basketball and football tickets, which will range from $1 for soccer games to $5 for football.

UConn spokesman Mike Enright says the school plans to begin construction in the spring of next year.
