KANSAS CITY SLURS…The Kansas City School District has canceled all remaining sporting events in 2016 with a nearby school district after students from one of the district’s schools reported being taunted with racial slurs.
The school district says that Lincoln College Preparatory Academy reported fans from Lone Jack yelled inappropriate and racial slurs during a girls soccer game last week.
Lone Jack officials said an investigation that included interviewing coaches, students, fans and game supervisors found no evidence of anyone using racial slurs at the game. The district, about 25 miles southeast of Kansas City, said it was saddened that someone felt uncomfortable at an event it hosted.
In response, Kansas City decided to cancel all sporting events with Lone Jack through this calendar year.
NCAA-EA GAME PAYOUTS…College athletes who sued the NCAA and video-game maker Electronic Arts over the use of their likenesses are seeing the payoff.
Attorneys at the Hagens Berman firm say they mailed out the first checks last week to roughly 15,000 of the 24,000 players eligible to receive money. The law firm said the median check was about $1,100, though some were written for as much as $7,600.
The money comes from two settlements reached in 2014 for a combined total of $60 million. The plaintiffs said the NCAA and EA illegally used college football and basketball players’ names and likenesses in video games for years.
Hagens Berman also has extended a deadline for another 7,000 athletes to send in a W-9 to avoid paying taxes on the settlement.
BASEBALL SNAFU…The nation’s top high school baseball prospect will have a 19-strikeout, no-hitter he threw this week erased over a transfer rule.
New Jersey’s high school sports governing body said that Barnegat High School senior left-handed pitcher Jason Groome violated transfer rules after playing at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, last year.
The 6-foot-5, 230 pound pitcher throws a 97 mph fastball, along with a curveball and changeup. He was named the top prospect in the 2016 draft by Baseball America.
The NJSIAA says students violating the rule are ineligible to participate for 30 calendar days or half of the season. Barnegat coach Dan McCoy told NJ.com that Groome could return later this month.
