SDSU MBB…Tra-Deon Hollins scored 28 points with nine rebounds – both career highs – and had a key blocked shot in the closing seconds to help Omaha beat South Dakota State 96-92 Wednesday night.
Hollins made 9 of 12 from the field and finished with eight assists and four steals. Tre’Shawn Thurman scored 19 on 8-of-9 shooting and Jake White added 18 points for the Mavericks (16-10, 8-4 Summit).
After Hollins made a jumper and Thurman hit a 3, George Marshall sandwiched a layup and a 3-pointer around another jumper by Hollins to tie it at 92-all with a minute remaining.
Thurman’s putback of a missed jumper by Hollins gave Omaha a 94-92 lead with 32 seconds to play. Hollins blocked a shot by Marshall on the other end and SDSU committed two turnovers, and Thurman made 2 of 4 free throws from there to seal it.
Reed Tellinghuisen led the Jackrabbits (19-6, 8-3) with 21 points.
Omaha shot 58.9 percent overall and 61.1 percent from 3-point range – both season highs.
USD BB SUSPEND…University of South Dakota basketball coach Craig Smith has confirmed that point guard Shy McClelland has permanently left the team after being suspended.
The Milwaukee native and transfer from Mesa Community College in Arizona had started 21 games in his first season with the Coyotes. He was averaging nearly 12 points, four assists and 29 minutes a game.
Smith said last week that McClelland had been suspended indefinitely but didn’t say why.
Smith says McClelland decided to leave the team on his own. He said the school will “support him and help him any way we can.”
DWU MBB…The defending NAIA men’s basketball national runner-up is preparing for a tough post-season run.
Dakota Wesleyan coach Matt Wilbur says the two-through-nine teams in the Great Plains Athletic Conference are evenly matched. If the Tigers get through that, he says there’ll be tough competition at the national tournament.
Wilbur says those top teams seem to have a common thread – it seems they each have at least one NCAA DI caliber player
BKGS TO DWU…Two Brookings High School seniors will be joining Ross Cimpl’s Dakota Wesleyan football program.
Matt Mason spent most of his high school career on the offensive front – but may find himself on the Tigers’ defense.
Brayden Sik (SEEK) says the DWU coaches liked him as an athlete – and want him to be ready to step into any of several positions.
Sik and Mason both say Dakota Wesleyan has an up-and-coming program – the Tigers just missed out on the 2015 NAIA playoffs.
STATE GYMNASTICS…The state high school gymnastics meet begins Friday morning at Swiftel Center.
Nine teams will compete for the “A” team title. These teams represent the top three teams from each of the two region meets, along with the next three highest team scores from the region meets. Teams competing are Britton-Hecla, Chamberlain, Deuel, Madison, Milbank, Parkston/Ethan/Hanson, Sisseton, Vermillion, and Wagner/Bon Homme.
Madison will be defending its 2014 and 2015 championships.
Madison had the top qualifying meet team score with 140.625. Jenni Giles of Madison has the top individual event qualifying scores on all events including all around.
Nine “AA” teams competing are Aberdeen Central, Brookings, Mitchell, Rapid City Stevens, Sioux Falls Lincoln, Sioux Falls O’Gorman, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Watertown, and Yankton.
Mitchell is returning to defend its team title this year. Rapid City Stevens had the top qualifying meet team score with 142.925. The top individual event qualifying scores are as follows: Hannah Riker, Rapid City Stevens on bars with a score of 9.40 and all-around with a score of 37.125; Lizzie Miller of Sioux Falls O’Gorman on beam with a score of 9.35; and Quinci Herll of Mitchell on floor with a score of 9.70 and on vault with a score of 9.475.
STATE WRESTLING…Class “A” wrestling teams are a little over a week from regional tournaments, which determine qualifiers for the state tourney in Rapid City.
Harrisburg coach Tim Homan says he’d like to get eight wrestlers through a tough region:
Homan says there’s always a team, or individuals, that pull off some surprises.
He says, statewide, four or five teams sit close to the top.
IA ST FB…Iowa State wide receiver D’Vario Montgomery and running back Joshua Thomas won’t return to the team for next season.
The Cyclones say Montgomery has been dismissed for violating team rules. Thomas intends to transfer to another school.
Montgomery was fourth on the team with 27 receptions for 335 yards and three touchdowns last season.
Thomas ran for 295 yards as a freshman. But the rise of Mike Warren, who led all freshmen nationally with 1,339 yards in 2015, likely played a role in Thomas’s decision to leave.
AD CADDIES…Caddies have lost their class-action lawsuit against the PGA Tour claiming they were forced to wear bibs that made them “human billboards.”
The ruling came just over one year after the lawsuit, which grew to include 168 caddies, was filed in federal court in northern California.
U.S. District Judge Vice Chhabria on Tuesday dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice, meaning the caddies cannot refile their complaint.
Caddies have been complaining about their treatment by the tour. They went after the tour over wearing bibs, which include the logo of the corporate sponsor that week. They said they effectively were being used for advertising without compensation.
Chhabria, however, found no merit. He ruled that the tour’s longtime policy requiring caddies to wear bibs did not implicate federal antitrust or trademark law.
MICH HS HOOPS SHOOTING…Authorities have jailed a 21-year-old man suspected of shooting and wounding three people outside a western Michigan high school basketball game.
The Muskegon County prosecutor’s office said Wednesday that Clarence McCaleb, of Grand Rapids, was arraigned on assault and gun charges after being treated for his own gunshot wound. Police say a sheriff’s deputy shot McCaleb after McCaleb pointed his gun at him following Tuesday’s attack outside Muskegon Heights High School.
McCaleb is being held on two bonds totaling $500,000. His lawyer, Adam Masserang, didn’t immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment.
Police allege that McCaleb shot and wounded two females and a male after the boys varsity game between Muskegon Heights and a Grand Rapids school.
Officers were in the parking lot before the game because they had been warned about possible trouble.
