SDSU MBB…Deondre Parks scored 15 points, including 7 of 10 from the free throw line, to help lead South Dakota State to a 56-52 win over Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday.

Mike Daum added 14 points, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, for the Jackrabbits (10-2), who have won four of their last five games.

South Dakota State trailed 47-46 with 3:42 left, but Jake Bittle made a layup sparking a quick 5-0 run that gave the Jackrabbits a four point lead which they held to the end.

Christian Terrell scored a layup for the Eagles (6-5) to cut the South Dakota State lead to 51-49 with 1:25 to go. But the Jackrabbits made 5 of 6 at the free throw line over the final 40 second to close it out.

Marc Eddy Norelia scored 26 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Florida Gulf Coast.

SDSU WBB…Ellie Thompson scored a game-high 15 points but it wasn’t enough as the South Dakota State women’s basketball team lost 58-57 to Green Bay Saturday.

The Jackrabbits had a chance for the win with one second left but a 3-point shot by Clarissa Ober off an inbounds pass missed.

Kerri Young and Macy Miller each had 13 points. Miller also had six rebounds and five assists. Ober finished with seven rebounds.

Green Bay was led by Allie LeClaire with 14 points and Mehryn Kraker with 12 points.

BHS BBB…Watertown outscored Brookings 41-27 in the second, and third, quarters – and went on to post a 66-56 ESD Conference boys’ basketball win over the Bobcats Saturday.

Nate Davis had 18 points and Spencer Waege 12 for the Arrows.  Alex Gauer pulled down seven rebounds.

Isaac Brandt scored 21 points, and Devin Coughlin and Zach Treiber ten each for the 0-2 Bobcats.

Bobcat head coach Travis Engebretson says foul trouble hurt his team:

Brookings clawed back into the game in the third, but another Watertown run put it away.

Watertown also held a 35-19 rebounding edge.

IA WRESTLER COLLAPSE…A Spencer High School wrestler died after collapsing at a weekend tournament in northwest Iowa.    A Spencer Hospital spokeswoman says Austin Roberts died Saturday night at the hospital.    Roberts collapsed earlier during a tournament at his high school in Spencer and was taken to the hospital. It wasn’t immediately clear why he collapsed.    Roberts wrestled at the 220-pound weight class, and he was ranked sixth in the state in Class 3A. Last year, he placed eighth in the state tournament.  The 6-foot-4 Roberts also played on the offensive and defensive line for the Spencer High football team.    School officials planned to offer grief counseling at the high school.  A youth wrestling tournament scheduled in Spencer Sunday was cancelled.

BLIZZARD…The Brookings Blizzard picked up a big 3-2 shootout win in Bismarck Saturday. Bismarck led 1-0 after one period with a goal from Jared Pike. The Blizzard jumped ahead 2-1 in the second on goals from Nick Cardelli and Peter Valent. Bismarck would tie things up early in the third on a goal from Harrison Aide. After a scoreless overtime, the lone goal of the shootout was scored by Zach Mitchell. Both goalies played well as Josh Kuehmichel made 31 saves in the win and Nick DeSimone made 33 saves in the loss in his Bobcats debut.

Tucker DeYoung scored twice and Gavin Paczosa made 34 saves as Aberdeen picked up a 4-1 win Friday over the Blizzard. Both of DeYoung’s goals came in the first period as Aberdeen jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Brookings drew the score to 2-1 with their lone goal, which came in the second from Logan Rivard. However, two more goals in the third from Jake Leitner and Austin Heakins secured the win for the Wings. Magnus Lindhe took the loss in goal for the Blizzard, making 17 saves.

WIENEKE HONORED AGAIN…SDSU wide receiver Jake Wieneke continues to rack up postseason awards as he was named to his third Football Championship Subdivision All-America team, earning recognition on the Walter Camp FCS All-America Team. The team was selected by FCS head coaches and sports information directors, and certified by the accounting and auditing firm, Marcum LLP.

Wieneke led the Jackrabbits with 72 receptions for 1,472 yards and 11 touchdowns during the recently completed 2015 season. He currently ranks second among FCS players for receiving yards and receiving yards per game (122.7). His average of 20.44 yards per reception also ranks fourth.

NDSU FB… Eric Perkins returned a punt 88 yards for a touchdown to finish off a dominating first half and four-time defending FCS champion North Dakota State beat Richmond 33-7 in a semifinal game Saturday night.

The Bison advanced to the Jan. 9 championship game in Frisco, Texas against Jacksonville State. Troymaine Pope ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Gamecocks in a 62-10 drubbing of Sam Houston State.

North Dakota State led 26-0 at half, and it should have been more. The Bison drove into Spiders territory with all eight of their drives, with two ending on missed field goals. They also blew two point-after tries.

North Dakota State (12-2) built a 247-67 advantage in total yardage by halftime. Richmond (10-4) crossed onto the Bison’s side of the field just once in the first half.

The Bison are 16-0 at home in the FCS playoffs.

NCAA VB…Freshman Mikaela Foecke had 19 kills, Amber Rolfzen added 10 and Nebraska won its fourth NCAA volleyball championship with a three-set sweep of Texas on Saturday night.

Cheered on by a tournament-record crowd of 17,561 at CenturyLink Center, 50 miles from Nebraska’s Lincoln campus, the Cornhuskers (32-4) ended a five-match losing streak against the Longhorns (30-3).

Kelsey Fien punctuated the Huskers’ big night when she slammed a set from Kelly Hunter. Fien went to her knees as her teammates swarmed the court.

Foecke was named Most Outstanding Player of the final four. Nebraska also won national titles in 1995, 2000 and 2006.

Yasmeen Bedart-Ghani led the Longhorns with 11 kills, and Amy Neal added 10.
