SDSU FB PLAYOFF…South Dakota State will open the FCS playoffs Saturday at Montana – with the winner to visit third-seed North Dakota State December fifth.

The NCAA announced the pairings Sunday morning.

The Jackrabbits double-overtime loss at Western Illinois Saturday may have cost them a top-eight seed, and first-round bye.

It’s SDSU’s fourth consecutive post-season appearance – head coach John Stiegelmeier says they have to be good stewards of the opportunity.

Five Missouri Valley teams made the field – NDSU and Illinois State are seeded, with SDSU, Northern Iowa and Western Illinois in the field.  All five are in the same half-bracket.

Senior tight end Cam Jones says the team was shooting for a top-eight spot, but will be ready to play.

Jones says the Jacks can still play better.

The complete FCS bracket:

Fordham @ Chattanooga (Winner @ #1 Jacksonville)

The Citadel @ Coastal Carolina (Winner @ #8 Charleston Southern)

Colgate @ New Hampshire (Winner @ #5 James Madison)

Southern Utah @ Sam Houston State (Winner @ #4 McNeese State)

South Dakota State @ Montana (Winner @ #3 North Dakota State)

Eastern Illinois @ Northern Iowa (Winner @ #6 Portland State)

Duquesne @ William & Mary (Winner @ #7 Richmond)

Western Illinois @ Dayton (Winner @ #2 Illinois State)

SDSU FB… Sean McGuire ran for a touchdown in the second overtime to give Western Illinois a 30-24 win over South Dakota State on Saturday.

McGuire finished with 19-of-40 passing for 282 yards and a score for the Leathernecks (6-5, 5-3 Missouri Valley Conference). Nikko Watson ran for 178 yards and a touchdown. Devon Moore also ran for a score.

But it was McGuire’s touchdown run in the second overtime that made the difference against the fifth-ranked Jackrabbits (8-3, 5-3).

With the score tied 24-24 in the second overtime, South Dakota State’s Jay Carlson missed a 35-yard field goal, setting up McGuire’s 7-yard keeper four plays later for the win.

Western Illinois trailed 10-3 at the break but Moore ran for a score late in the third quarter and McGuire threw for another early in the fourth to give the Leathernecks a 17-10 lead.

Jacks’ head coach John Stiegelmeier says SDSU never had control of the game.

MN HOCKEY… Richfield High School has canceled its boy’s varsity hockey program for this season because of a low number of players.

On Wednesday, Shute told players and parents the season was canceled. He says it was “a sad, sad day.”

Richfield made six state tournament appearances from 1962 to 1991. But the program struggled to stay competitive in recent years. The Spartans went 2-22 last season.

Richfield will look to form a co-op with another program next season.
