UND has been without a nickname the last three years after the state Board of Higher Education retired the controversial Fighting Sioux moniker that the NCAA deemed offensive. A committee this summer finalized five nickname options: Roughriders, North Stars, Fighting Hawks, Nodaks and Sundogs.
Voting is open to UND students, faculty and staff; school alumni and retirees; donors; and athletic event season ticket holders. People who fall into more than one of the categories may vote only once.
UND expects to announce the voting results early the week of Oct. 26.
BORTKE OBIT… Longtime University of Mary athletic director and men’s basketball coach Al Bortke (BORT’-kee) has died.
The Bismarck school says Bortke died Sunday at age 78. His funeral is Saturday morning at Church of the Ascension.
The Hettinger native became Mary’s first athletic director in 1973 and served in that role for 35 years before retiring in 2008. He also coached the men’s basketball team to 335 victories before leaving that position in 1989. The school’s basketball court is named in his honor.
During his tenure as athletic director, Mary went from one varsity sport to 19, became a national power in the NAIA and transitioned to NCAA Division II.
Current athletic director Roger Thomas says Bortke was “the cornerstone for University of Mary athletics for close to four decades.”
BIG TEN FB SCHEDULING… Big Ten schools can petition the conference to waive a requirement in the new football scheduling policy that teams must play one nonconference game against an opponent from one of the other five most powerful leagues.
Associate commissioner Scott Chipman said Tuesday conference officials would decide on a case-by-case basis.
Commissioner Jim Delany in July unveiled the new scheduling model that has each school playing one game against a team from the Atlantic Coast, Southeastern, Big 12 or Pacific-12 conferences or a major independent.
The Indianapolis Star reports that since the new policy was announced, Indiana has received permission from the conference to count games against Connecticut in 2019 and 2020 and Cincinnati in 2021 and 2022 as Power Five opponents.
NO KISS CAM?… Syracuse University is considering kissing its kiss cam goodbye after a letter to the editor suggested it sends the wrong message at a time colleges are trying to end campus sexual violence.
The camera framed unsuspecting couples in a heart on the Jumbotron at the Carrier Dome while the game crowd cheered for them to kiss.
Manlius resident Steve Port said in a letter to Syracuse.com that he saw “horrifying” kiss cam behavior during Syracuse’s Sept. 12 football game against Wake Forest. He says fans cheered as men forcibly kissed women who were clearly saying no.
Syracuse athletics spokeswoman Sue Edson says the university is taking time to assess the concerns.
In the meantime, the camera did not operate during Saturday’s game against Central Michigan University.
