MONDAY, AUGUST 3:

LEGION BASEBALL…Rapid City Post 22 scored on a throwing error with two outs in the bottom of the eleventh inning to defeat Yankton 7-6 and win the state “A” American Legion baseball title Sunday at Bob Shelden Field.

The Hardhats had 16 hits in the win – Walker Paz, Drake Messinger, Tanner Simons, Matt Vickers, and Erik Petry each had two hits. Paz drove in three runs.

Brad Ulmer had three hits, and Jordan Kathol and Austin Johnson two each for Yankton.

Riley McSherry shut out Yankton in the eleventh to get the win. Ben Cameron pitched two-thirds of an inning, and took the loss.

Johnson threw a complete game earlier in the day as Post 12 defeated Sioux Falls West 11-4 to get to the title game. Assistant coach Robb McClemans says Yankton showed character.

Post 22 coach Mitch Messer says the Hardhats didn’t play as sharp as they’re capable. Rapid City will open the Central Plains regional Wednesday in Bismarck.

Yankton eliminated Brookings Saturday with a 13-3, seven-inning win. Brookings committed six errors in the game, three in the final inning.

Ulmer, Colin Muth and Adam Walter each had three hits for Yankton – Muth and Walter each drove in three runs to back up Kathol, who fired a complete-game eight-hitter.

Jared Tschetter and Sam McMacken each had two hits for the Bandits. Jacob Puppe, who allowed five runs on eight hits over four innings, took the loss.

BOMBERS BLACK…The Brookings Bombers Black defeated Sioux Falls West 15-0 Sunday to win the VFW 13-14 “AA” Majors baseball title in Watertown.

The Bombers close the year at 41-11-and-one.

Brookings jumped on top right away – Drew Cole hit a three-run triple in the first, followed by a Ryan Miley RBI single. The Bombers plated eight in the second – Jacob Schoon, Justin Devine, Tyler Kreutner, Cody Niklason and Cole had run-scoring hits. In the third, Sean Sullivan doubled, Parker Beers drove him in, Justin Devine added a two-run triple, then Trevor Berreth’s single scored Devine to end the game.

Six of nine Bombers’ hitters had multiple hits – Cole drove in six runs, Schoon drove in three and Devine two.

Cole fired a three-hitter to get the win.

Brookings defeated West 7-3 Saturday to get to the title game. The Bombers had to rally from a six-run deficit to defeat Sioux Falls East 9-6 in nine innings – and defeated Harrisburg Friday 19-0 in three innings.

Head coach Alex Johnson says the Bombers won in the ways championship teams do.

The team won the state title last year as Bombers Maroon.

BULLETS…The Brookings Bullets dropped two games in the state 15-16 VFW minors baseball tournament in Yankton.

Brookings fell to Sioux Falls West 16-6 Friday, then lost 7-6 to Pierre Saturday.

Sioux Falls West defeated Watertown 10-2 Sunday to win the tourney title.

BOMBERS MAROON…The Brookings Bombers Maroon loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but a bases-loaded diving catch in the outfield with two outs gave Rapid City a 9-8 win Sunday in the 13-14 VFW minors state tourney title game.

Brookings defeated the Rapid City Reds 11-1, beat Sioux Falls East 4-1, and the Watertown Grey Sox 5-3 to get to the championship.

AMATEUR BASEBALL…The Castlewood Monarchs scored in the top of the ninth to edge Volga 6-5, and earn a berth in the state “B” amateur baseball tournament.

Riley Haug, Alex Fodness, Brody Grantham, Lucas Ching and Grant Fodness each had two hits in the win. Dallas Sikkink drove in two runs to back up winning pitcher Chris Lather, who threw the first eight innings.

Adam Mills had three hits, and Layne Lucas two for Volga. Lucas and Adam Vaux each drove in two runs. Randy Santema pitched the final five innings, and took the loss.

Clark earned the Eastern Dakota League’s top seed in the state tourney with a 6-3 win over Lake Norden. Andrew Wegner had three hits and Lane Hovde two for the Traders. Jay Huber threw eight innings of seven-hit baseball for the win.

Austin Gilbertson and Jordan Johnson each had two hits for Lake Norden. Johnson drove in two runs. Tim Kuphal allowed six runs over six innings and took the loss.

WOLTERS CAMPS…Former South Dakota State guard and NBA free agent Nate Wolters has teamed up with Sanford POWER Basketball Academy’s Allan Bertram for two youth basketball camps in early August. The Nate Wolters Basketball Camp is at the Sanford Pentagon Tuesday and

Frost Arena in Brookings Wednesday.

Both camps are for athletes from second to 12th grade. Wolters and Bertram will focus on individual offensive skill work in ball handing, live-ball moves, shooting fundamentals and drills, footwork and overall scoring techniques.

A second-round draft pick in 2013, Wolters has spent time with the Milwaukee Bucks and New Orleans Pelicans. He is currently signed to play in Europe. Wolters left SDSU as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,363 points and is the only player in Jackrabbit history with more than 2,000 points.
