The G20 is forcing some agents to cancel their open homes and delay auctions, while others are planning to seize on the opportunity.

Domain Group figures show there are slightly less homes scheduled to go under the hammer this weekend, with 100 properties across Brisbane up for grabs.

That compares with 126 homes last weekend and 141 the week before.

LJ Hooker agent Wayne Morgan said the G20 “was an issue” for agents.

His office, like many others, has intentionally delayed auctions that were initially pencilled in for this weekend, including one for a property at 10 Quay Street, Bulimba.

“We chose not to run it this weekend,” he said.

“I would expect most people that can leave the city will.”

Mr Morgan said his company would still provide open homes for prospective buyers, but expected numbers to be low.

He added he was also skipping town, heading down to Evans Head for the long weekend.

“I’m not looking to break record attendances for this weekend,” he said.

While some auctions have been delayed by a week, others have been pushed forward to midweek.

Space Property agent Angus Commins said his company wasn’t holding any open homes for properties this weekend and a listing at 47 Ryan Street, West End, would now have its auction on Wednesday, instead of Saturday.

“The four-week campaign would have had [the auction] landing on this weekend,”  he said.

“We decided to have the auction tonight because no one is working on the weekend of the G20.”

Ray White Nick Given also changed the date for an auction at 123 Towers Road, Ascot, so the sale could be wrapped up before the world’s most powerful men and women touched down in Brisbane.

“I knew it wasn’t a good idea to have the auction on the G20 weekend,” he said.

“Brisbane might be gridlocked and you don’t want anything to hamper buyers.”

However, Queensland Virtual Realty agent Paul Simpson plans to seize on the rare opportunity of having less competition from other agents on a Saturday.

He said he already had two registered bidders for an auction at 15 Greene Street, Newmarket, this weekend, and both parties planned to bid over the phone while enjoying the long weekend away with family.

“I showed some other people through yesterday and they’re desperate to find a home. They’re renting and have to move in three weeks,” he said.

“Most agents have cancelled their auctions or open for inspections, but with what’s happening in the market, things are selling quickly, so I’m expecting a lot of people coming through on Saturday.”

Other agents on the Gold Coast are also hoping the G20 might attract more registered bidders.

Professionals agent Jeff Burchell has a property listed for auction this weekend at 39A Cronulla Avenue, Mermaid Beach.

He said he was hoping some families might turn up and decide to bid on the spur of the moment.
