As a former NPS Yellowstone Ranger I can tell you that this is a solid product, and if used properly gives you a much better chance of surviving a bear attack. Remember these issues, though 1)NEVER put your bear spray in a pack or anywhere where you cannot get to it and use it within 6 seconds. Bear attacks are usually very fast, and often do not happen in front of you. The bear could attack from the side, or god forbid, the back. It is similar to a car accident, it happens so fast you are stunned, 2) practice for a second or two spraying it.Know how to use it before you use it. 3)the best practice is not to rely on this to prevent an issue with bears. By the time you are under attack, you already HAVE an issue. This spray is not as effective under windy and rainy conditions, therefor, on days like that pay attention to the wind and your environment, especially by streams. Stop, look and listen. If you feel nervous, yell and CLAP YOUR HANDS as loud as you can. Always hike with groups, and make sure at least two of the people have bear spray and know how to use it.
If you get charged it will change your life. I have been several times. Part of my work, and risk you take in working in the park. I wouldn’t have changed that for anything. But, pay attention in bear country. This is serious stuff.
You are more likely to have a car accident with tourists in the park than have any bear issue. But be prepared and be loud in the backcountry.

my neighbor came home the other day and was surprised to find a stranger in her house burglarizing it. She had noticed a vehicle parked in front of her house and down a spell but didnt think anything of it at the time. Because we live in a rural area, she happened to have a can of this particular bear mace in her purse and it was the first thing that she reached for . She sprayed THE ENTIRE CAN on this guy and he hightaikled it to his car and took off. Apparently the fumes overcame him as he waqs fleeing because he smashed into someone and when the police arrived realized that it was the same guy. The article was in the local newspaper. Strangely, when I tried to look up the article I came across this update [...] puts a whole new spin on it …turns out the “burglar’ is a cop !! Gotta love California !!

I paid a little extra to get this with the holster (the same spray can be bought with no holster). If you have not seen one, they are bigger than you would expect–more like a miniature fire extinguisher than the sie of personal sprays. I kept mine hanging from a backpack chest strap, which kept it at chest height and ready to spray without unclipping. It is a nice secure holster, that leaves the spray ready for action without removing from the holster. But after two days on the trail the belt loop stitching pulled out. So I just looped a large caribiner-style clip through the round finger hole on the spray bottle, and clipped it in the same place on my gear. This works just as good as the holster, and the caribiner does not come in contact with any trigger mechanism. I would recommend getting a large caribiner clip and saving your money–don’t buy the holster.
I was impressed with how they designed the trigger mechanism and the safety lock so you could deploy this one-handed if necessary. But who really knows how these would work on a bear who wants to kill you? When we were on the backpacking trail at the Grand Teton National Park this summer, a family with no bear spray was walking through a berry patch on the trail and had to hide behind trees because a relatively young bear kept coming toward them with great interest. Another hiker pulled out some bear spray and used it on the bear, so the young bear learned a valuable lesson for both bear and man as he scampered away. I am not sure if it was the same brand, but all of the bear sprays are the same thing—same hot pepper spray as used in mace, at a higher concentration–so we can really just review the packaging and delivery of the spray. This brand seemed to be the most common that I saw on the backpacking trails in Grand Teton. If you see a ranger on the trails, he will ask to make sure you have bear spray, even though it is just “recommended” in the literature. I think they see bear spray as an important part of their bear management program at the Tetons. It is as much about conditioning the bears, as it is about protecting the person with the spray. Bears need to view humans like they are skunks on steroids. Don’t bother with bear bells, unless you feel like a trail fairy. But do buy the bear spray.
