Now That’s a Good Cup o’ Joe!, June 18, 2010

This review is from: GSI Outdoors Glaicer Stainless Percolator with Silicone Handle, 12 Cup (Sports)

Admit it, how many drip coffee machines have you purchased in your lifetime? Too many I’m sure, just like me. The carafe breaks, can’t find the right style replacement, or it just stops working after a few years.

I am DONE with shoddy electric appliances. I did a little online searching, and I decided that a stainless steel percolator was the right choice:

* No glass carafe to break, no electrical components to wear out, and I can use it even if the power is out (gas stove or outside on campfire).

*all stainless steel parts, sturdy, easy to clean

*basket has a cover (not all percolator baskets do)

* dome is made from Lexan resin, which is BPA-free and resistant to breaking (unlike percolators with glass domes, and I have read some reviews that complain of frequent cracking)

* does not require filter papers

* doesn’t hog up counter space in my tiny galley kitchen

* makes a REALLY GOOD cup of coffee!

I admit there was a learning curve when it came to learning how to brew coffee with a percolator, but it made me realize that making truly good coffee is a lost art form that needs to be reclaimed. My first pot I turned the stove on high and boiled the crap out of it — yuck! After doing a little online browsing, I learned that you need to keep it more at a simmer. Once the coffee starts to perk (you’ll see it splashing in the dome), turn the heat down a bit and let it perk for no more than 5 minutes. Mmmmm . . . .

I am never going back to drip brew, and I have purchased my last coffee maker. I am going to have this percolator with me until the end!

My Impressions, February 8, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

This review is from: GSI Outdoors Glaicer Stainless Percolator with Silicone Handle, 12 Cup (Sports)

I have had this for about a month now and here are my impressions/comments on the GSI Glacier 12-Cup Coffee Pot.

1.) Sturdy – taking it out of the box, it was of a heavier gauge stainless steel than I thought it would be. I think it will be around for a very long time – this thing is made to last.

2.) As advertised, it is seamless. There are no seams where it can leak.

3.) The silicone handle works like a charm. I can remove this percolator directly from the stovetop with my bare hand. I don’t need a hot pad or towel to protect my hand from the heat – the silicone handle stays cool to the touch.

4.) The lid is permanently connected to the body of the percolator with a hinge. I didn’t see this anywhere in the product description. I generally wash it by hand, but if you want to run it through your dishwasher, you may have to jockey things around to be able to fit it in your particular dishwasher since you cannot disconnect the lid from the body.

5.) I’ve had to learn how to make coffee with a percolator (rather than an automatic dripper) and I think I’ve got it “dialed in”. Simply put, as another reviewer said, “it makes a great cup of coffee”.

6.) I’m very happy with the product so far (I’ve only had it a month) and would buy it again.

Best Camping Percolator I Have Owned!, July 19, 2012

Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

This review is from: GSI Outdoors Glaicer Stainless Percolator with Silicone Handle, 12 Cup (Sports)

Purchased this as an upgrade to our Coleman 4 cup percolator. We were never happy with the coffee made by that percolator and we needed a large coffee pot for an upcoming Cub Scout camping trip. Purchased this hoping that the Stainless would hold up to rugged use and that it wouldn’t flavor the water like our aluminum coffee pot. Happy to say that this purchase was worth every dollar. We made over 6 pots of coffee in one day and then used it again on a family campout.

Here are some perks of this pot…

* Large capacity – great for large groups or multiple families camping together

* Rugged design – seemed better made than my pervious percolator – like the plastic bulb on top because it is hardier than the glass ones

* Stainless means that the water for you coffee is not flavored by the pot like with aluminum pots

* Silicone handle allows you to take the pot off a hot burning propane camp stove without a hot mit – Handle didn’t melt on camp stove or over campfire (when placed on a grate over the fire)

* Holds heat well and coffee stays warm longer than our previous pot

I do recommend having your coffee ground for a percolator. It is a different grind than found in pre-ground coffee in the store. First time we used it, we used standard ground coffee and noted that grounds ended up in the bottom of the pot. On our next trip had the coffee ground for a percolator (at Starbucks but Peets will do it as well) and it worked perfectly. No grounds in the bottom of the pot.

Please note that it does hold 12 measuring cups of water, but if you drink large mugs of coffee it is more like a 8 cup coffee pot.

All in all, this pot was worth every penny paid and I am happy to pay a little more for a quality product like this pot. Needless to say, our old Coleman pot is going in the Goodwill bag.
