I purchased the short-lived previous version of this product, Dremel 765-01 Pet Nail Grooming Kit, and liked it so much that I bought the Dremel 7300-PT for friends. There are two differences between the 765 and the 7300- the casing of the 73000 is gray, and Amazon charges , rather than .
The newest version of Dremel’s Pet Nail sander is well worth the money. It has changed what was previously a tortuous experience into something quick and easy.
I did some research before buying the 765 and 7300, and ended up choosing these over other products for several reasons.
PediPaws Pet Nail Trimmer- Several friends had bad experiences with it, generally finding it to be of poor quality.
Dremel 7700-02 MultiPro 7.2-Volt 20,000 RPM Two-Speed Rotary Tool with 50 Accessories- Although this is more powerful, it is also more expensive, heavier, larger, and louder, which would make it difficult to use on my nervous pet.
Dremel 761-03 Cordless Pet Nail Grooming Rotary Tool- This is the older version of the 765; the primary difference is that this required AA batteries. Because several people complained about having battery problems I decided to go with the updated version.
I made the right choice! I have a large pitbull who has dark nails, hates having anything done to her feet, has very long quicks that are fast to bleed and slow to stop, and wiggles and refuses to stay still when she is nervous. I have tried clipping her nails, filing her nails, and even taking her on long runs on rough ground to wear them down. This is by far the best solution.
I began by letting her see and smell the sander, and then running it over her body and feet with the power off. I then turned it on and held it away from her, again letting her hear, see, and smell it. I had treats at the ready, but she was fine. I held it near her for several minutes while on, and then touched the non-sanding end to her body so that she could feel the vibration. No problems. In fact she bent down to smell it, and pinned the sanding band between her face and my hand. We both jumped, but no pain or damage to either of us. Although I was prepared to stop if she got tired or nervous, she was so good that I was able to do all four paws. It took about 15 minutes, but with lots of “good girl” and belly rubs interspersed she was fine.
The sander itself is relatively small and light, making it easy to hold even for long periods. It is easy to put together; it comes with a small wrench to put new sanding bands on. Unlike its predecessor it comes with a rechargeable battery and charger. When sanding, even on high, it is fairly quiet and vibrations are minimal. The body of the sander was warming a bit after 15 minutes, but I noticed no heat in either my dog’s nails or the sanding band. In addition the battery was still going strong. My sole complaint about this product is minor; the LED light on the charger lights up to indicate a connection between the battery and the charger, but doesn’t change color or go off to indicate when charging is complete. The instruction book indicates that a full charge should take approximately 3 hours, so that’s what I’ve gone with. I had to recharge it after about the fourth or fifth use.
I gave the Dremel 7300 to a friend, and she’s used it on her two German Sherpherds and her cat, with similar success
This is a great product for nervous animals and/or owners, as it’s almost impossible to do damage with, and allows easy care for an oft-neglected aspect of your pet’s health.
**Update 10/19/11:
After about a year of ownership the Dremel is still my go-to tool for trimming my dog’s nails. My only complaint is that the battery is not holding its charge nearly as well as it originally did. With one full charge I can usually get through a full sanding on all four feet, however by the end the power is running low, and I don’t doubt that soon I won’t be able to do all four feet at once. Despite this drawback I still highly recommend the dremel for those who want an alternative to clipping their pet’s nails, and when the battery on mine dies for good I will definitely be investing in a new one.
**Update 2/16/12:
The battery continued to get worse, so on a whim I called dremmel. Apparently there is a 2 year warrenty on this sander, so I mailed in the sander, battery, and charger for them to test. I was a bit nervous about just sending it off, but about a week later they sent everything back with a new battery and it’s working great.

Dremel 7300-N/8 MiniMite 4.8-Volt Cordless Two-Speed Rotary Tool
I have to let everyone know that as a professional groomer & a dog trainer, I can tell you that these Dremel “Pet Grooming Kits” don’t have the power to do a good, quick (the key word being QUICK!) job on sanding pet nails. Like Pedi-Paws & other products like them that are packaged & geared towards pet owners, this is actually a little better than Pedi-Paws, which bogs down, because the motor is not strong enough to really work well. In my opinion, this product isn’t either. I actually bought a regular Dremel that is sold for industrial purposes. The model I bought was the “Dremel 7700-02 MultiPro 7.2-Volt 20,000 RPM Two-Speed Rotary Tool with 50 Accessories”, which works like a dream! It’s powerful enough to do the job quickly without putting the dog thru the torture of holding them there while these inferior (in my opinion) products that do not have strong enough motors in them. I have 2 Jack Russell “Terrorists”, one which HATES having her feet handled & the other, who has always been very fearful of anything new. I now have the JRT who hates to have her feet handled in a place where she will let me use the dremel I have to do her nails, (even though she doesn’t like it, she will let me do her nails with this. If I get the old fashioned nail clippers out, she runs for the hills. My other, more fearful “spooky” JRT loves it! Once I introduced her to it & she got used to it, she now lays on her back & actually falls asleep while I’m grinding her nails down!! The model I mention above which I bought, came with a carry case too, which I can also keep combes, hemostats (for plucking ears on my ‘Roughy’ JRT & lots of other “doggie” items. It’s become my “Doggie Doctor Bag”, which I LOVE! My Dad actually bought the Dremel I have at a local hardware store & is much cheaper than the “Pet Grooming” Dremels I’ve seen here. I was looking to buy a replacement battery for my Dremel & saw all these other products & just had to let folks know that they can save a lot of money & get the job done much quicker with a faster RPM that won’t bog down & most dogs will happily tolerate!)
What I did to get my dogs used to these, was (BEING PATIENT WITHOUT GETTING ANGRY IS THE KEY HERE FOR SUCCESS FOLKS!
1. When I first brought it home, I attached the battery & set it on the floor, to let the dogs “approach & retreat” at their own pace. Dogs always use this method when they are unsure. They will approach something new & then retreat, checking to see if it’s safe. After the first couple times of approaching it & they actually started to sniff it, I used a clicker, but you can also say “Good Dog” AS THEY ARE SNIFFING IT! Timing is SO IMPORTANT) then treat them. Do this as many times as you need to, until they seem more comfortable & get to the point that no matter WHERE you set it on the floor (put it in a different room on the floor, so they will get used to it in different rooms. Dogs don’t generalize well.) Do this until they get to where it doesn’t seem to be such a “weird” thing to them when they see it. You’ll know when, they will start to pay less & less attention to it. VERY IMPORTANT ~ NEVER, EVER turn it on yet!
2. When they are used to seeing it sitting on the floor around the house & seem to be OK with it. You’ll know, they will pay less & less attention to it, because it’s become a part of the ‘scenery’. Then turn it on in another room. Sit on the floor & hold it, LETTING THE DOG APPROACH YOU! NEVER go towards them with it, drag them to it or hold it out towards them. When they start coming a little closer (remember, this is a new sound, so they will keep their distance, but if they don’t run away, toss a nice yummy treat to them that they can get without coming closer. WAIT & LET THEM APPROACH YOU! It may even be a good idea to have the best, smelliest treats that your dog loves with you (let them smell that you have them by putting one in a closed fist & letting them smell your hand with the treat inside, before you go turn it on. As you toss the treats to the dog, try to get the dog to take just one more step closer before tossing another. This takes patience, but BELIEVE me folks, the benefits outweigh the time this takes initially, in the long run! When you can get the dog comfortable enough to come close, let the dog smell it. Maybe rub something nice & smelly on the upper casing, like a hot dog or some other food your dog LOVES!. The goal here is to get the dog to come close to you WHILE the Dremel is running, on his own & eventually, rub the Dremel housing on the dogs body with it running. In this case, it’s helpful to have someone to help you & feed GREAT treats while you are doing that. The dog will develop GREAT…

I purchased this Dremel 7300-PT for the sole purpose of trimming the nails on my very skittish Golden Retriever. She HATES to have her nails done. As soon as it arrived, I plugged in into the AC outlet to get a full charge. Although I did not use it for another week or more, when I did, it still retained a full charge. I was able to use it for nearly a half hour to trim all of our gal, Molly’s, nails, using the high speed setting with no loss of power. I like the fact that this Dremel is cordless which means no cord to get tangled up in her paws! The unit is not particularly loud (even on high speed), allowing me to trim Molly’s nails with minimal nervousness on her part.
I defintely recommend this particular Dremel for use on your pet’s nails. Plus, it can also be used for myriad other tasks around the house, too, where a Dremel would come in handy!
