Question by Sun: Are Work Boots or Hiking boots more appropriate?
I will be working with a volunteer group for a week helping restoring a national park that had been hit by Hurricane Sandy and helping it get ready for the summer season.
I don’t have much experience camping or hiking so my question is, will hiking boots or work boots provide me proper insulation, weather proof, durability and comfort during this trip? There will be hiking and there will be lots of debris removal, trail restoration and vegetation clearing. The Trip will last 1 week.
And a suggested brand/ store will help me greatly in knowing where to start with my gear shopping.

I say just go to dicks sporting goods and grab a pair of hicking boots..because hicking boots will give your feet comfort and protection from the terrain

I think you’d be better off with work boots.
They’ll be heavier than hiking boots but will afford your feet and ankles more protection.
The problem is, you have indicated that whether hiking or work, they will be new; not broken in. That’s going to be a problem. If possible, buy them tomorrow and wear them every day until you go on the trip. Bring lots of extra thick wool socks. Also get thin polypropylene inner socks to wick moisture away from your feet.
When one works or hikes, ones feet swell, so buy boots a size (or 2) too big. Fill the gap with socks, as you can adjust that gap throughout the day. Bring some sandals or flip flops for when you get back to camp. At the end of the day it is a great pleasure to get out of those boots and they need a chance to air and dry out.
Be sure to shake out any critters before putting them on in the morning.

Your best bet would be work boots. Get a pair with steel toes to protect your feet. You can get the best prices at Walmart, or Kmart. I have been wearing these type shoes for over 40 years. Brahama is the brand that I prefer. Don’t remember which store I bought the last pair from.
