Dear Parent or Guardian,

Earlier this year, students in grades three through eight were required to participate in New York State’s English language arts and math assessments, which were based upon the new, more rigorous Common Core Learning Standards introduced in the 2012-2013 school year.

A significant decrease in this year’s assessment results was experienced across Westchester County and New York State. Although Todd Elementary and Middle School students faired very well in comparison to other high performing districts, we too experienced a decline in results consistent with comparable districts. This does not come as a surprise, as Commissioner of Education John King Jr. alerted all districts that scores were expected to be significantly lower than the 2011-2012 scores due to the new standards, effectively creating a new baseline measurement of student learning. The State Education Department has also acknowledged that a substantial portion of this year’s assessments included material that was new to districts and never taught to students.

In spite of our comparative success during this time of transition, we are certainly not satisfied with the results. However, we believe there is little correlation between these latest assessment results and the quality of the educational experience for Todd and Middle School students, or their ultimate ability to become college and career ready. Our opinion is supported by the high percentage of Briarcliff High School graduates attending the most prominent and prestigious colleges and universities in the country, as well as the many recognitions, awards and accolades received by so many of our students at all grade levels.

In the ensuing days and months the Briarcliff Manor School District will conduct a careful analysis of the latest data to identify areas for curriculum revision and any additional professional development required. Our faculty and staff remain committed to dedicating the necessary time, attention and resources to ensure that our students achieve at commensurable levels across the schools and content areas. Together we will meet this latest challenge.

Specific results and information will be presented at a public Board of Education meeting in September.
