My best friend Natasha and I had a little epiphany recently. Instead of ending our get togethers abruptly because of looming bedtimes, wouldn’t it be fun if we all just spent the night and got to hang out long after the babies went to bed?
It was a very obvious idea, but one we hadn’t considered before. Before kids, our weekends looked like this or this and we always like to joke about how starting dinner at 6pm and wrapping things up by 8pm is still slightly hilarious given how our nights used to begin at 9:30pm.
So we planned a night of laid back fun - dinner, playtime, popsicle making (with our new Zoku - so awesome). The big girls were so excited to get to spend the night together and the little boys have just hit the stage where they are really starting to interact and enjoy each other’s company.
We set up the travel crib in our guest room for baby Benji and had planned to let Everly and Mylah sleep together, but the excitement of the event proved to be just a little too much for ourĀ two and half year olds, so Mylah wound up sleeping in our guest room too.
Once the kids were asleep, we all sat on our front porch, candles lit, drinking wine and talking. No one looked at their watch or worried about going home. The kids all slept soundly and we got to enjoy a little bit of the easy, no-place-to-be feeling that we once knew.
The next morning it was fun to wake up together - feeding the kiddos fresh fruit in the chaos of our toy strewn playroom, eating sausage biscuits Brent and Scott picked up from the little restaurant around the corner from our house, and sipping on french press coffee while the girls squished playdough through their fingers.
It was an event we’ve promised to replicate on a regular basis. So easy and enjoyable! It felt as if we had somehow found a way to have the best of both worlds. Babies and late nights. Best friends and little families. A simple idea and the best kind of fun!
Love,
M
