Christian Dior has been known as a fashion trend setter since entering the fashion world in 1946 with his innovative design ideas. His first collection ‘’New Look” launched in 1947, was the turning point in the world of fashion. Dior’s creative designs revealed women’s curves. Born in Granville, Northern France in 1905, Christian Dior was one of the 5 children born to Alexander Louis Maurice Dior, the owner of a highly successful fertilizer factory. Wanting to satisfy his father, Christian enrolled in Ecole des Sciences Politique in Paris to become a diplomat. However, his passion towards art and design eventually prevailed and he soon opened an art gallery together with a friend with the money his father gave him under the condition not to put family name on it. After the unfortunate closure of his gallery, Dior began selling fashion sketches to make ends meet and eventually ended up working as a designing assistant to Robert Piquet. His road to fame was thorny and bumpy, but first collection ”New Look” was the turning point for him and fashion world as well. The success in designing modern and trend setting clothing pieces, soon pushed Christian into the world of fragrance. His first Christian Dior perfumewas ”Miss Dior” which became popular fats. Soon, followed an exclusive line of cosmetics and other products.

* Miss Dior, launched in 1947, was the first Christian Dior perfume, the designer created for his younger sister.
* Dior was very superstitious. He never started working on a collection without reading tarot cards and all his collections include a coat named after his birth place, Grandville.
* Dior was invited by the British Royal family to present his collection in court since he was admired by the princesses, Margaret and Elizabeth. However, his collection was not ‘proper’ for the time due to the opulent look and king George V forbid the princesses to wear anything from Dior’s collection believing it would set a bad example and evoke bad rumors.
