Featured in Dwell Magazine, The LA Times, Sunset Magazine and more, this pre-engineered environmentally constructed concept home is part of a design system developed by architectural firm Blue Sky Building Systems and Palm Springs based o2 Architecture.

Situated among an astonishing desert garden of ancient boulders, juniper and piñon trees, co-owner and designer David McAdam’s vision of an affordable, sustainable and beautifully designed “hybrid prefab” home was designed to tread lightly on the environment by observing key environmental principals of smaller footprint, minimal disturbance to the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, use of renewable and solar resources, and living simply.

Constructed of a unique interlocking galvanized steel frame system, the home is a prototype, built in sections and brought to the site to be assembled where it appears to float above the scenery (with a seasonal stream that runs beneath it). The interiors were designed to emphasize open spaces and a connection with nature with walls of glass that allow a magnificent relationship with the landscape. The main living space includes the sitting room that opens out to the terrace overlooking the rocks and an eat-in kitchen with dining for six.

The two bedrooms are positioned on either side of the house with stunning views out to the rocks and the desert beyond. Every room in the house has a door to the outside and is furnished with a vintage modern aesthetic that contrasts with and complements the desert environment.

The grounds have largely been left as they were found with the exception of a secluded jacuzzi platform, a “cowboy” cooling tub, a yoga platform and an outdoor fireplace and lounge for dining under the stars.

This ingenious and stylishly designed home is a blissful retreat in an unforgettable setting.
