Art as a self-help tool in psychotherapy treatment is now being considered as a viable method for reducing the symptoms of moderate mental health issues. In Bournemouth, a series of art therapy sessions have been set up for people with dementia. The sessions will take place at Vale Road sheltered housing accommodation in Boscombe.

£5,990 has been donated through the Inspired by 2012 Health & Wellbeing Legacy Fund programme. In granting the money for the art therapy, the award panel said: “Your project fully met the criteria and priorities for the fund and the panel have no doubt it will have an incredibly positive impact on health outcomes for those involved whilst providing an invaluable opportunity for us to monitor, evaluate and learn about new and positive health interventions.”

Bournemouth Council’s Cabinet member for Adult Social Care, Councillor Blair Crawford, said: “Art therapy is proven to help those with dementia in many ways but there are currently no workshops for those with dementia in Bournemouth. The sessions not only will provide an opportunity for people to take part in a stimulating activity but they will also help increase connections and social circles for participants, carers and their families.”

The Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Local Authorities, supported by the Public Health team, are very keen to build on the success of the 2012 Olympics in Dorset and have developed a legacy fund to provide a significant resource for investment in innovative and evidence based local projects in Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole.
