More and more men are seeking aesthetic treatments to help them feel and look younger. According to a report from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), men underwent over one million non-surgical cosmetic dermatology treatments like dermal fillers, Botox, and laser resurfacing in the last year. What are two of the most popular, minimally invasive aesthetic treatments men are seeking?

Botox

Botox is the most well known of a variety of injectables like Xeomin, Dysport, and Myobloc, that uses botulinum toxin to temporarily paralyze muscle activity. Botox will relax the facial muscles that lead to wrinkles. According to the American Society for Plastic Surgery, botulinum toxin treatments were the single most common procedures in 2012, and accounted for over 40 percent of all aesthetic procedures for men.

“Just as in women, the eyes are one of the first facial regions to give away a man’s true age,” says Valerie Goldburt, MD, of Advanced Dermatology P.C. “Botox is an easy, quick way to rejuvenate and smooth that area, especially when targeting frown lines between the eyebrows; crow’s feet fanning out from the corners of the eyes; and forehead furrows, the side-to-side lines forming when the eyebrows are raised. Looking tired or angry is aging–but Botox can wipe the years away.”

Botox treatment causes minimal pain; a tiny needle is used to insert the product under the skin. Numbing medication may be applied before the treatment. You can expect to go about your daily activities after the procedure, which only takes about 15 minutes. Results last for about three or four months.

Dermal fillers like Juvederm

Wrinkles can be one way to give away a person’s age, but an aging face also tends to lose volume, which gives displays the years. Dermal fillers consist of a variety of substances, depending on the type chosen and they can help you have a more plump and smooth appearance of the lips and face. This includes the nasolabial folds — the creases on the sides of the mouth that go upward to the nose.

Dermal fillers — unlike Botox — will show results immediately after the substance is injected. Men may also choose fillers to square off their jawline, reducing jowls, and building out their chin to give them a stronger look.

Certain dermal fillers contain lidocaine, which is used to decrease any discomfort that may be related to injection. A client may need more than one injection to achieve desired results. Some pain, swelling, itching, or redness can occur for a few days after treatment. The majority of fillers last from six to 18 months. Treatment does not take a lot of time, so many consider fillers to be a “lunchtime” procedure.
