BYOD, or Bring Your Own Device, gets a lot of attention in IT security circles, but it’s just the latest layer of complexity and risk in an organization. That risk is growing by the day: mobile devices are ten years behind web browsers in security, and their use is exploding—mobile data traffic growth doubles every year.
Western New York IT professionals will gather for the Rochester Security Summit at the Hyatt Regency on October 9 and 10 to discuss appropriate measures and policies to manage this growing threat. The threat is not what companies think, though.
“Companies are afraid of what I call exit interview sabotage, but far more common is phishing targeted at managers with access to sensitive data,” says Matthew Lynch, IT security engineer with iSecure.
Cyber criminals are focusing on mobile applications, as these pared-down versions of their desktop counterparts have far less security. Major breaches might include:
Phishing for a password, and using that as a stepping stone to compromise other accounts
Accessing a company’s contact database, sending it another server, and selling it to a competitor
iSecure’s Lynch suggests that companies start with their existing policies to begin to enforce Mobile Device Management—standard policies like:
Enforce encryption on VPN to access sensitive resources
Require a secure connection for company email
Require encryption for corporate sites with sensitive data, like Sharepoint, Groupwise servers, and other fileshare repositories
iSecure works with leading financial and educational institutions concerned with proactively protecting their data. ESL Federal Credit Union analyst Dave Mogavero says, “Upgrading our VPN made a night-and-day difference. iSecure’s help made integration painless, and our end users have been ecstatic with the productivity boost, while maintaining top security.”
IT professionals from all industries are invited to attend the Rochester Security Summit, where iSecure and many of their partner companies will discuss practical ways to ensure rigorous protection without impeding productivity.
