Bank Machine recently published the results of a survey they carried out, which focused on the usage of contactless payments in the UK. Results show that consumer’s attitude towards contactless payment technology is not as positive as hoped for with a mere 17% stating that a ‘cashless future’ would make their lives easier. Furthermore, 51% of Brits have no idea as to whether any of their bank cards are enabled for contactless payments.

Fraud concerns are the main factor for the majority, with 96% of people preferring other payment methods to ensure the safeguarding of their money. Cash came out on top in the survey, with 48% confirming they felt most protected against fraudulent practices when using cash, compared with 37% when using cards.

A spokesperson from SmartDebit commented “In terms of security, contactless payments are protected by multiple layers of security, protecting both the consumer and the retailer. Although results suggest the majority of consumers are worried about fraud, we are yet to hear of any successful exploitation of contactless payments. They are a quicker, more convenient method of payment when purchasing small goods from supermarkets or unattended facilities such as parking meters and vending machines".
