August 26th was Women’s Equality Day and to mark the significance of the day, President Obama announced that 29 major U.S. employers have taken the White House Equal Pay Pledge. Under this pledge, the companies promise to do their part to close the gender pay gap. Among the companies were some major tech firms: Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, Intel, IBM, Dropbox, and LinkedIn. Also taking the pledge were: Anheuser Busch, Delta Air Lines, Coca-Cola, General Motors, and Nike. According to the White House, the pledge includes five main points, reported Engadget: –Acknowledging the critical role businesses must play in reducing the national pay gap; Committing to conducting an annual company-wide gender pay analysis across occupations; Reviewing hiring and promotion processes and procedures to reduce unconscious bias and structural barriers….

ELLE Canada Pays Tribute To Black Hair In “Natural Anthem”
ELLE Canada got the memo when it came to conversations about cultural appropriation and why women of color are so protective of braids, afros and everything in between. ELLE’s September issue (which everyone knows is like the holy bible of beauty and fashion out of the entire year) features a tribute to black hair which actually features black models. In 2016, this shouldn’t be as big of a deal as it is, but due to high fashion magazines often using celebrities like Kylie Jenner crowned in cornrows or Fergie to rock Bantu knots, it just may be something to be celebrated. The featured story is called “Natural Anthem Beauty Shoot” and showcases six women of color rocking a collection of styles including afro puffs, baby hair and of course braids. The six models are as rich in diversity as they are melanin, hailing from Kenya, Burundi, and Canada…

NYPD To J’ouvert Festival Attendees: “Do Not Shoot Anyone. Do Not Stab Anyone”
The annual J’Ouvert Festival, which takes place before New York’s massive West Indian American Day Carnival this coming weekend, was beset with violence last year. The two murders at the festival prompted the NYPD to place fliers warning attendees to “not shoot” or “stab anyone.” As reported by Gothamist, NYPD tweeted last Thursday an image of the flier warning, which mentioned the two killings and the indictment of four people connected to the crimes. Local news station WABC also reported on the warning, reporting that the police placed fliers in and around Brooklyn where much of the celebrations will take place.
