KENINGAU: Barisan Nasional (BN) will continue to be the choice of the people of Sabah for years to come because the people understand and subscribe to its goals and struggle, especially with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s transformation programmes.

This has been proven by the continous support shown by the people for Barisan Nasional, especially in Sabah and Sarawak where Barisan Nasional won 47 parliamentary seats in the recent general election, said Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) deputy president Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Maximus Ongkili.

However, Dr Ongkili, who is Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister, said that to further enhance the rakyat’s support and Barisan Nasional’s strength in Sabah, there was a need to implement a power sharing formula that was transparent, equitable and implementable.

This reinvention was crucial for the future of Barisan Nasional especially as the political landscape had already changed and people had more political choices, he said.

“This is  to make sure that all sections within the Barisan Nasional family are taken care of and feel they have a role to play by participating in the political process, decision making and to benefit from development.

“Then they will feel they are truly part of the Barisan Nasional family and this mechanism will attract people further to Barisan Nasional’s struggle,” Dr Ongkili added.

He also pointed out that a proposed power sharing formula was previously drafted by a working group led by Sabah Speaker Datuk Seri Panglima Salleh Tun Said Keruak.

“We hope this will be re-looked into and the formula formally adopted by the state Barisan Nasional and government. Such mechanism is needed to ensure power sharing is truly practised within Barisan Nasional.

“Besides, the grouse that power sharing is at times absent has been voiced out for some time now and the future of Barisan Naisonal depends on this kind of reinvention,” he said.

On PBS, Dr Ongkili reminded members that the party’s strength rested on its sincere struggle for the people, its membership and efficient machinery, all which determined people’s continued belief in the party.

He also called on members to appreciate and practise multi-racialism as the basis of the party that set it apart from other political parties and also that attracted all races to PBS.

“PBS was founded by party president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan as a multi-racial party and it will continue to be what PBS is about. Our multi-racial identity is what makes us stronger than other parties that represent a single race,” he said.

Dr Ongkili also said that the party must look into bringing in more young members to ensure the continous renewal and sustainability of PBS.

“The current set of senior leaders, including myself, must begin to effect the renewal changes while the young must come up with new ideas. We want the young people, as the party’s future leaders, to prove their capability by showing and sharing ideas to strengthen the party and continue PBS’ original struggle,” he said.

He praised PBS Sook division led by Datuk Dr Bernard Maraat for working hard to ensure the victory of Barisan Nasional in the Pensiangan parliamentary seat as well as the two state seats of Sook and Nabawan during the recent general election.

“This is truly in the spirit of Barisan Nasional family to go all out to ensure the victory is Barisan Nasional’s, eventhough the seat belongs to another component party,” he said. – By Jane Ritikos
