The “Catalpa” – Nature at Borgo Grondaie
1- The “Catalpa”
As soon as you get here, this majestic tree will appear in front of your eyes.
This plant, which came from both the North and the Central part of America, derives its name from the word “Kuthulpa”, used by the “Creek”, an ancient community of this zone.
Because of its 20mt. height and 12mt. width, the Catalpa is an excellent refuge for many bird species.
Its large leaves offer a shelter from the rain and shadow during the hottest days.

2- The “Feijoa”
The “Feijoa sellowiana” is a quite small plant (it’s about 5mt. high) and it belong to the Myrtaceae, the same family of the “Eucalyptus”.
The Feijoa, just like the Catalpa, come from the American Continent, but unlike the previous one, it come from the South part, in particular from Brazil, Columbia, Argentina and Uruguay.
What is uncommon in this plant are their fruits, which are not so sweet, but have an incredible perfume.

3- The “Corbezzolo”
The “Arbutus unedo” (known as Corbezzolo) is a small tree, like a shrub, that have an incredible characteristic: its fruits ripen one year after the flowering. This makes the mature fruits and the flowres to be blended together. For this reason you see 3 colour in just one tree:
– the red of the mature fruits
– the white of the flowers
– the green of the leaves
This plant is typical in the western Mediterranean part countries.

4- The Lemon Tree
While there are no doubts about its name’s origins (it came from the Latin “Citrus limon”), there is so much uncertainty talking about its place of origin: someone say that the Lemon tree come from China, while others believes that the ancient Romans already knew it. What is certain is that the first cultivation was in Sicily, which has the reputation for producing the best lemons.
The fruit, which is yellow, can be used in many ways: for example, it can be used to prepare the lemonade, a drink made by lemon juice, water and sugar, because of its sour taste. Furthermore, we use it for pharmaceutical and therapeutic purposes.

5- The Medlar
The is an ancient proverb, which says: “Col tempo e con la paglia maturano le nespole” (“The medlar ripens with time and straw”). It means that you need to be patient and wait to see some results. That is because you cannot eat the Mespilus Germanica’s fruits when you pick them, but you need to wait until they become edible. The medlars are quite high trees (they can grow until 5mt.), that offer an incredible overhead shot, once the flowering is completed.

This marvellous plant, which can grow up to 20mt., comes from the Central America and Himalaya.
It has oval leaves and so much big violet flowers.

7- The Olive tree
Undoubtedly the most known plant of our geographical area are, the olive tree is an evergreen plant, whose not so big leaves have an oval shape. Even their flower are very small and they are composed by tiny white petals.
Doubtless, it is its fruit what makes this tree unique. The olive, which can be green or violet, is used to produce a particular oil, the “olive oil”. This delicious oil is used in Italy as a seasoning.
On the other hand, we do not eat the fruit as it is, because of it extremely bitter taste, which need a particular treatment.
