When I first started blogging, I wrote about photography, pet photography, cats, dogs, interracial relationships, dating a cop, and law of attraction. All niche blogs. I loved the idea of a general blog, but didn’t think I could pull it off so I started and stopped blogs on all of the aforementioned topics. Wow!

Choosing what to write about should be so easy, but it can get complicated. Most people that I meet who want to blog have an idea of what they want to write about, but when they go to get started, that idea either doesn’t support a blog or they find themselves limited by their idea. That’s sort of what a niche blog will do.

I write two niche blogs, one about photography and one about building a blog. Although I can step about 5 feet off my topic (sharing stories about our dogs), I can’t go to far, because people read my blog for a specific reason. But that doesn’t mean that YOU have to write a niche blog. You can go for a general blog, sharing all kinds of topics – even setting up your navigation bar to direct people to the things you love.

If you’re going back and forth wondering if you should write about a specific subject (a niche blog) or if it’s better to have more general thoughts (a general blog) then I have a wonderful eBook that will help.

I learned so much from Choosing the Scope and Structure of Your Blog and I’m excited to recommend it to you. Tricia Meyer, Deborah Carney and Liz Fogg share their thoughts and experience with both general and niche blogging and I learned the following:

It’s easy to get traffic to a more targeted site (niche blog) than it is to a general site.

With a niche blog, you may only be able to work with a small amount of targeted brands; however, with a general blog, you may be tempted to go overboard on the advertising, overwhelming your audience.

With a general blog, you’ll have one link on your business card; with niche blogging, you may have a list that you ‘re sharing when someone asks “what do you blog about?”

For $0.99, this is a fantastic investment for everyone who is interested in and/or passionate about blogging. I highly recommend this eBook if your interesting in learning more about general and niche blogging.
