Sharing the different ways to syndicate your content

I was talking to a friend for a short while on Facebook about blogging and specifically about how and why people share their own content and my thoughts went to the Adlandpro  blogging community and  how people are syndicating their own content.
During our conversation I came up with the different reasons as to why people share their blog posts and came up with these three main reasons:

To drive traffic to their blog

 To raise their visibility overall

To add value to the conversation

( funny enough not many people think of number three “adding value to the conversation” which has me questioning why?)

Considering how  many people are syndicating their content, I thought this would be a good time to talk about ways to syndicate your content in a way that will add value to your readers but also adding value to yourself.
Understanding that syndicating means sharing your work in part or whole onto a different website where people can comment also means  understanding that you are not letting others take the credit for your work, you are simply letting your content reside elsewhere for the purpose to drive traffic, raise that visibility and to create a conversation with other relevant audiences.  While you may all be going yippee another way to market my blog, be sure that you think about the content you have written, focus on the quality of your post before you consider syndicating it to other networks otherwise all your hard work will bomb!

There are many ways to syndicate your content from including social sharing buttons in your blog posts, using press releases, including blog post links in your email signature and using services such as Scoop.it where you can curate your own blog posts.

Other ways to syndicate your content are:
Submit your posts to different social bookmarking sites
Digg
Reddit
StumbleUpon
All of these sites are useful for link building and can help with Search engine optimizing ( SEO for short)

Another way to syndicate your content is to submit your posts/article  to blog directories. For those of you who are not aware of what blog directories are..

“A blog directory is a specific type of web directory which focuses on listing blogs. Blogs, short for web logs, are a type of website commonly updated frequently, usually by an individual or a small group of individuals, and often listed as posts with the newest posts first. Because there are literally millions of blogs in the world, a blog directory helps people sort through them by interests, and helps them find the type of blog they are looking for. A more advanced blog directory may include small reviews or human-edited descriptions, to further help users find what they’re looking for.”

Toprank blog has one the most comprehensive Blog Directories I have seen in a long time, so check it out.

Now how do you get the most value out of your content being syndicated?

*Make sure you are following your own post so that when people comment, you will reply quickly.
*A lot of sites will let you create and post original content (articles). Make a practice of sharing your originality along with your syndicated work, people will value you a lot more
*Not only is it important to let others know where you are syndicating but make a practice of commenting on other posts ( outreaching) and even sharing what other authors are saying.
*Just about any site that allows syndication, will let you have a profile. Fill it out completely and be sure to put in your site link as well as a way to contact you.

Like anything you do with your blogging it is important to understand where Google stands on different issues.
The fact is you need to be careful! you dont want to syndicate your content to too many sites as it could be seen as duplicate content. Always be sure to link back to the original post.
Just to be clear on Google’s take on Syndicating

Google says: “Syndicate carefully: If you syndicate your content on other sites, Google will always show the version we think is most appropriate for users in each given search, which may or may not be the version you’d prefer. However, it is helpful to ensure that each site on which your content is syndicated includes a link back to your original article. You can also ask those who use your syndicated material to use the noindex meta tag to prevent search engines from indexing their version of the content. “
Hopefully you now have a better understanding of how Blog syndication works, how you can do it, keeping in mind the idea of driving traffic, creating visibility and to me the most important function of syndication – talking to other people means work!

There is one last thought that I need to share with you about syndicating your content..ready? If you syndicate your content on a site that outranks you, then while you may get more visibility, you may lose in the end as the other site will get more clicks. It is something to think about, so think carefully.

There is no doubt that syndicating has its place in promoting your content, it can be a good SEO tactic and as you now can see there are many ways of doing it. Everything takes time and work – my question to you is – Are you ready to put in the time to do the work to help you grow?
