The Sr. Director Engineering manages and leads the following functional R&D Hardware groups: Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technical Services, Fluid Management Systems Engineering, Reliability Engineering and Electrical Engineering. This position reports to the VP R&D and Technology Development and is a member of the BDB – Cell Analysis R&D Leadership Team.
The Hardware Engineering organization within Cell Analysis R&D is responsible for the creation, development, design, and maintenance of all BD Biosciences (BDB) Cell Analysis instrumentation products in coordination with the analysis of market trends and developments. The incumbent will consistently work with abstract ideas or situations across functional areas of the business. Through assessment of intangible variables, identifies and evaluates fundamental issue, providing strategy and direction for major functional and sub-functional areas. This position requires in-depth knowledge of functional areas, segment and unit strategies, and BD’s goals and will be accountable for leading an organization with responsibilities for highly complex, highly innovative instrumentation systems, products, and introducing novel solutions to unmet research and healthcare needs. Has the added responsibility of integrating different technologies into new comprehensive solutions across projects within the BDB Cell Analysis business.

The Sr. Director Hardware Engineering will direct the activities of the functional areas through his/her managers who have overall responsibility for the successful operation of their assigned areas. He/she will make decisions on all administrative or operational matters pertaining to the functional groups to ensure effective achievement of operational objectives.
This role participates in functional development of methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people. Ensures budgets and schedules meet BDB’s requirements.
The incumbent regularly interacts with senior leaders, executives and/or major customers. Interactions frequently involve special skills, such as negotiating or attempting to influence the senior level leaders regarding matters of critical significance to the functions. The Sr. Director Hardware Engineering is accountable for working with other senior leaders, within and outside of R&D, to establish strategic plans and objectives.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

In addition to the responsibilities listed above, specific responsibilities include – but are not limited to:
* Provides leadership to the R&D Hardware functional areas.
* Working with the R&D Leadership and other key stakeholders, responsible for defining the scope of the Hardware development effort, the possible product deployment options and the development and analysis of requirements.
* As a member of the R&D leadership team, works seamlessly with peers in the other R&D functions. Participates in creating the overall technology strategy. Drives the organizational strategy for the Hardware organization and participates in defining and executing the organizational R&D strategy.
* Works closely with Software Engineering (including Firmware Engineering) and System Engineering, as well as with Applications Development to insure consistent and smooth interfaces.
* Works with Marketing and Business Development to discern need for new product development programs at BDB – Cell Analysis. Prepares background materials, estimates, proposals, etc., needed to obtain approval for vital programs. Determines resources and skills necessary to implement assigned development programs.
* Drive best practices in Hardware design documentation across sites
* Ensures communication and review of defined data on a regular basis that provides senior management the visibility, suitability and effectiveness of all instrumentation platforms. Works through the organization to enable recommendations / changes are made.
* Talent development – Active participation in identifying and developing top talent in the organization. Conducts performance appraisals, hiring, coaching and counseling, career development conversations, and disciplinary actions. Provides on-going balanced feedback and mentoring.
* Allocates resources to programs. Works with the Core Team leaders and other stakeholders to insure optimal coverage of the respective programs.
* Monitors hardware engineering operations, conducts design reviews with key technical resources within and outside of the hardware engineering organization, and reports progress to management. Provides feedback and directives to subordinate managers as necessary to maintain schedules, meet design objectives, and produce needed equipment, within approved resource, schedule, and cost constraints.
* Responds to needs of, and provides support to, other departments of BDB – Cell Analysis, as required.
* Participates in establishing and maintaining compliance to product design and manufacturing regulations and specifications.
* Leads in development and implementation plans for testing products.
* Develops and controls budgets for capital expenditures, operating supplies, and labor. Ensures adequate resources are provided.
* Communicates project status, progress, problems, and procedures across all applicable BDB – Cell Analysis groups.
* Demonstrated ability to make sound, compliant judgments.
* Carries out Human Resource management responsibilities such as hires, job assignments, termination recommendations, transfers, promotions, salary actions, and processes performance reviews on time.
* Monitors conduct and relationships among the employees supervised to prevent discriminatory acts or comments.
* Keeps abreast of the US and non-US regulations affecting own area of supervision/management and complies with those regulations. Initiates changes to BDB practices and procedures to support compliance requirements. Communicates the need for compliance to members of own functional area. Brings regulatory compliance questions/issues to the attention of the next level of management.
* Promotes a safe work environment. May provide recommendations on maintaining the safety of the work environment. Participates in Environmental Health and Safety programs.
* Performs other related duties and assignments as required.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education and Experience:
* Minimum Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in mechanical, electrical engineering or physical sciences related field. MS degree and Ph.D. a plus.
* Minimum of 10 years of increasing responsibility in a variety of product development or business management positions.
* Minimum of 8 years of supervisory experience.
* Experience developing hardware products in a Phase Gated Product Development process.

Assets
* Experience in the development of complex instrument systems involving hardware, electronics, fluidics and optics, ideally in a healthcare, medical technology or life sciences area.
