BD Diagnostics is a world leader in infectious disease diagnostics and automation of the clinical microbiology lab. The Staff Scientist, Microbiology R&D, Infectious Disease Diagnostics provides an opportunity for an innovative Clinical Microbiologist to guide and be an active contributor to the development of automated diagnostic products used in the clinical microbiology laboratory. The successful candidate will focus primarily on laboratory automation, including development and integration of methods for specimen manipulation, detection, identification and antimicrobial susceptibility of microorganisms. Candidates will leverage leadership skills, broad-based technical expertise and recent experience from the clinical microbiology lab, with an aptitude toward instrumentation/automation, to solve problems and drive critical programs for the business. The position requires experience at designing, executing and providing critical analysis of experiments aimed at product development and troubleshooting, as well as the ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.
He/she will have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as an essential member of multi-disciplinary teams, and will provide insights from the clinical microbiologist in design and development of new products and strategies. Responsibilities:

* Provides technical leadership and domain expertise in Clinical microbiology, including laboratory workflow, regulatory guidelines, pathogen characterization, etc., to cross-functional project teams aimed at the development of novel infectious disease diagnostics. Works closely with other functions (i.e., marketing, operations, quality as well as Engineering R&D) to troubleshoot, characterize and resolve needs in existing technologies.

* With minimal oversight, delivers hands-on lab-based experimental contributions toward programs or business objectives. Is highly learning agile and organized: proficient in executing multiple, simultaneous projects in a time efficient manner.

* Serves as a clinical microbiology expert for the businesses R&D organization. Leads programs where addressing infectious disease diagnostics initiatives have significant business impact.

* Effectively represents R&D as a primary technical contact for cross-business and external interactions. Leads efforts to identify and manage internal and external collaborations leading to high-impact results.

* Working with various functional leaders, identifies business, product, efficiency, and other opportunities that address opportunities for continuous improvement.

* Maintains substantial current knowledge in relevant state-of-the art principles in clinical microbiology. Exercises and contributes to intellectual property and the scientific literature.

* Establishes cross-business networks and leads efforts to effectively leverage expertise across the organization toward product development and problem solving.

* Prepares and presents regulated documents, protocols, and technical reports. Keeps detailed notebook records.

* Guides the successful completion of major programs where failure to achieve timely results or erroneous decisions may cause serious delays in program schedule.

* Manages junior personnel, providing training and mentoring. Assures technical oversight to experimental design, data generation and interpretation.

* Leads or participates in resolving regulatory, manufacturing or safety issues affecting existing products or products in development.
Job Dimensions:

* In-depth broad-based knowledge of clinical microbiology and its role in health care. A working knowledge of clinical microbiology including workflow, information management, results interpretation, regulatory requirements and guidelines, and communication pathways.

* Accountable for driving product development to completion, on time, and meeting specifications.

* Provides consultation and resources for the evaluation of future and existing technologies. Coordinates with other departments to insure the support of existing products and the timely delivery of new products.

* Develops and implements new technologies and procedures with the goal of being best in class.

* Coaches and mentors others to maintain a high level of performance and to maintain an exceptional level of expertise within the group.

* Functions collaboratively as an integral member of a diverse, multi-functional project team. Seeks input from necessary functions to develop comprehensive, integrated schedules.

* Ensure compliance with all the applicable regulatory agencies (FDA, Eucast, ISO) and corporate policies (GPDS, QA). Assures that the development and delivery of products are consistent with corporate standards and meets the requirement for performance and manufacturability. Experience in working in a highly-regulated in vitro diagnostics product development environment preferred.

* Outstanding oral and written communication skills. Ability to tailor summaries and presentations to an appropriate audience.

* Effective interpersonal skills. Adept at navigating highly-matrixed organizations, and establishing productive networks in a culturally and functionally diverse organization.

* Personnel management experience preferred.

* Demonstrated leadership potential required.

* Minimum of a MS degree in microbiology. PhD is preferred.

* A minimum of 4 years of recent clinical microbiology experience in a hospital or related clinical environment.

* Professional medical microbiology accreditations strongly preferred.

* Experience in personnel management and demonstrated leadership skills strongly preferred.
