Reporting to the Vice President of R&D for the Diabetes Care Business Unit, an exciting opportunity exists to lead R&D for a $1.0 Billion global portfolio in Advancing the World of Health thru reliable and accurate injection delivery of insulin to millions of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetic patients. The Director will also oversee the development of our R&D capabilities in China. This position will develop and drive portfolio strategy, lead end to end product development, actively support the large and complex existing portfolio and identify opportunities to accelerate growth. As an organizational and technical leader, the position will manage a technical R&D organization from multiple sites while identifying and developing talent. This leadership role will represent R&D across the organization and need to successfully partner with the Vice President / General Manager of the Injection Platform.

BD Medical – Diabetes Care is searching for a Director, R&D to lead a technical team focused on product development for the $1.0 Billion worldwide Injection Platform. As a Director, the ideal candidate will lead a talented technical team, align themselves to the business leadership and lead the design, development and commercialization of high volume disposable medical devices. This will include identifying, breaking down and solving deep technical problems. The ideal candidate will drive innovation through identifying regional and global unmet needs, develop new concepts, and lead new product development to accelerate growth globally through a steady cadence of new product launches. In addition, the candidate will successfully manage a large and complex existing global product portfolio to meet the business needs to innovate around cost reduction and product engineering. This position partners with technology development and strategic innovation to transfer new innovations into product development. In addition, it will lead a engineering function at multiple sites ensuring functional excellence and efficient product development resourcing, and build organizational capability. The candidate will have a demonstrated leadership track record of execution, accountability, customer focus, and talent development. They will participate with other members of the R&D Diabetes Care Leadership Team to establish strategic plans and objectives. Business acumen is required to align actions to strategic business objectives.

This person must ensure compliance with BD quality policies, procedures, and practices through appropriate communication, training, and education of sound quality assurance principles. They must also ensure compliance with all local, state, federal, and BD safety regulations, policies, and procedures.

Specific responsibilities will include the following as well as other duties, as assigned:
* Development of multi-year R&D strategies, product roadmaps, technology roadmaps, and enabling business strategies with a resulting R&D organizational plan.

* Leads the management of the product development portfolio and develops innovative ideas in collaboration with their team based on global & regional customer needs.

* Works through the R&D team to ensure the project and product requirements are robust and based on valid assumptions

* Ensures focus on becoming highly educated on the diabetes market thru conference education, reading published literature and in-person customer engagement.

* Responsible for the reduction to practice on development projects, planning of the development efforts, and driving the R&D Team’s efforts in execution from the start of the Concept Phase through Launch Phase (successful launch and commercialization of the product).

* Proactively manage the R&D expense budget from a planning and implementation including the annual strategic planning, annual budget and quarterly projections.

* Lead and manage R&D team. This includes all aspects of R&D talent management such as ensuring the right people, right roles and right capabilities. Actively develop and mentor associates to promote the next generation leaders and develop a strong and deep leadership talent bench.

* Identify and develop key technical individual contributor capabilities such as R&D Core Team Members who lead the technical aspects of programs.

* Maintain close cooperation and coordination between BDT and multiple BD business units, and collaborate with third parties organizations or partners.

* Ensure full integration with other divisions on best practices used by other businesses. Identify and leverage synergies, expertise, and resources when appropriate

* Maintain/Develop an infrastructure in support of the R&D strategy including the identification and implementation of key tools, processes, standards and metrics

* Continuously evaluate competitors’ products and maintain an overview on the state-of-the-art technology development. Develops a competitive landscape on performance and advises marketing functions on key messaging and claims to enable BD’s success

* Leads technical assessments and provides direction across multiple product development projects.

* Ensure compliance with local BD quality and regulatory policies, procedures, and practices through appropriate communication, training, and education.

_*Qualifications* _
Education and Experience Requirements:

* BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a closely related engineering degree required. An advanced degree in Engineering or an MBA is required. PhD is preferred.

* Minimum 15 years of experience in engineering/technical field, at least 7 of which must be focused on complex system level work, with a significant focus on medical devices.

* Demonstrated track record of at least 8 years attracting and managing diverse technical talent.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Demonstrated ability to inspire and develop a high performing diverse team across sites

* 10 years of experience preferred in global product development in the medical device industry with successful track record of delivering products to market (FDA Class 2 minimum).

* 5 years of experience in designing medical device products for high volume manufacturing (10M units/year or more) preferred

* Broad and deep understanding of disciplined product development processes, regulatory, and quality requirements including design control. This includes understanding of phase gate process

* Demonstrated deep understanding of establishing project and product requirements.

* Demonstrated knowledge of qualitative and quantitative market research

* Successful track record of developing multiple commercially viable complex medical device products and delivering to market.

* Prior experience in managing and leading cross-functional product development teams preferred.

* Regulatory standards (ISO14971, ISO 13485), and system level V&V planning and execution.

* Knowledge of Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodology.

* Successful experience working with outside contract development groups and the ultimate transfer to internal resources for a successful product launch.

* Business acumen to align actions with business objectives, knowledge of business context and goals, finance & marketing knowledge, knowledge of legal agreements and IP processes

* Excellent verbal and writing skills as well as presentation expertise to senior level leadership.
