Jen Lewis is a self described “menstrual designer”. She has released a macrophotography project where she takes photos of her menstrual blood in water.

The project, titled “Beauty in Blood,” was inspired when Lewis switched to menstrual cups and started seeing that her period wasn’t as disgusting as she’d always thought it was.

Lewis said she saw plenty of images of blood in the media all the time, but it was only in scenes where violence was happening and menstrual blood was never depicted, so she aimed to change that.

With the help of her husband, she started by pouring blood into the toilet and watching what happened. Next came an aquarium with salt water and fresh water to see if that changed the way it flowed. She has also experimented with different ways of pouring the blood into the containers. Lewis said, “I like to experiment with different blood delivery systems, i.e. pipette (awesome), turkey baster (terrible), chopsticks (excellent), travel shampoo bottle (also excellent).”

Lewis said she hopes the project will show people that menstruation is nothing to be afraid or ashamed of, which is a message that can’t be said enough.

What do you think of the project?
