November 15 – 30, 2015
Operated in conjunction with Sacred Earth Journeys
Join us as we adventure into the colourful ancient land of South India, with its sacred temples, yoga centres, authentic villages, flavourful cuisine, spiritual pilgrims, and festivals of light.
Let your senses be enraptured by the vibrant spice markets, the intricate rock carvings and the vast shimmering ocean, while your mind is calmed by daily yoga practices, quiet meditation in the world’s most sacred shrines, and time to connect to your inner light.
If you have always dreamed of visiting India, this is your opportunity! Guided by Michele Labelle, yoga teacher and breath facilitator, and expert local guide Charles, you will experience the best of India in a safe environment with like-minded travellers who are sure to become good friends, while making memories that will last a lifetime. All levels are welcome!
We begin our adventure in Mamallapuram where we can learn about the exquisite rock carvings that adorn this historic town. We will also meet with special guests such as Vedic Astrologers and Hindu Priests to deepen our learning and exploration of ourselves and this sacred land.
Our taste buds will delight at a hands-on cooking class with Chindi Varadarajulu, owner of L’Attitude 49 restaurant, and at a gathering for a Traditional Tamil meal on banana leaves.
We will spend 3 days in Tiruvannamalai where Sri Ramana Maharshi lived and meditated for 54 years. Here, we will visit Arulmigu Arunachaleswara Temple, thought to be the largest temple in the world dedicated to Shiva. We will also explore the caves on the slopes of Arunachala Holy Mountain where Ramana meditated for 23 years, and visit the Ramana Ashram where we will witness a Veda parayanam – a devoted study of the Veda.
Here, we will also experience the most beautiful festival in South India known as Karthigai Deepam, a festival of lights. As the streets and buildings glow red and gold, ghee is lit on the summit of mount Arunachala, a powerful beacon of light visible from afar. Thousands upon thousands of pilgrims come to Tiruvannamalai during Kaarthigai Deepam to walk around the Holy Mountain, stopping at devotional shrines along the way.
In Madurai, we will spend time at the Meenakshi Amman Temple and the Thirumalai Nayak Palace, the latter an example of architectural grandeur built by King Thirumalai Nayak in 1636 AD, and enjoy a fun cycle rickshaw ride to explore this colourful and spectacular city.
After our sightseeing and spiritual immersion, we will spend 3 nights and 2 blissful days at the Isha Yoga Center, where we can participate in our choice of yoga classes, meditation, and energy work. We then take an unforgettable train ride to Alleppey and spend 3 days enjoying the sights and sounds of Marari and Allepey, from the local fishermen casting their giant nets by hand, to the peaceful solace of a starlit beach yoga practice, and a tranquil backwater boat cruise.
We then travel to Cochin for our final full day together, where we indulge in a sightseeing tour of the ancient town of Fort Kochi, before gathering to watch Kerala’s famous dance-drama, the Kathakali, followed by our Farewell Dinner.
This sacred journey reveals the natural rhythms of Indian life and propels you towards finding your own inner sense of balance, joy, and profound well-being. We will connect our outward experiences and visits with our own inner work to fully appreciate the history, culture and spirituality of Southern India. We hope you will join us.

TOUR ITINERARY
Day 1 Sun, Nov 15: Arrive Chennai; Mamallapuram (B, D)
On arrival at Chennai airport you will be met and greeted by our representative and transferred toMamallapuram. Mamallapuram is a sleepy fishing village on the shores of the Bay of Bengal just south of Tamil Nadu’s capital, Chennai, and is home to some of southern India’s most spectacular rock carvings, with an ancient stone carving tradition that is very much alive today.
After spending time strolling along the beach and admiring the intricately beautiful carvings, we will gather for our Welcome Meeting where we can share our intentions for this journey and get to know our fellow travellers. This evening we will enjoy a special Welcome Dinner together.
*Please note that the Welcome Meeting will take place on Day 2 if most flights arrive late evening on Day 1.
(Total travel time today: 1.5 hrs)
(Overnight in Mamallapuram at the Grande Bay Resorts & Spa)
Day 2 Mon, Nov 16: Mamallapuram (B, D)
We start our day with an early morning yoga practice on the beach, which will ground our energy and focus on Mulhdhara Chakra: stability and physical health, a good place to start our practice. During our first session, we will open our heart & spirit to this ancient land.
After breakfast we will make our way into Mamallapuram for a sightseeing tour and to learn more about the rock carvings that adorn this historic town, which was a busy port by the 7thcentury Pallava dynasty. We can spend time admiring the exquisite details of the carvings, which include gods, humans, elephants, and wonder why the temples are incomplete and were never consecrated. Of particular interest is the Shore Temple, built in the 8th century AD and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to shrines dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu. The “Descent of the Ganges” monuments and “The Five Rathas” are equally impressive.
We will also have an opportunity to meet with a renowned Astrologerwho can offer guidance about the future. It is said that thousands of years ago, the great sages of India had the power to look into the past and future of the entire universe and recorded the life of every human being who had lived, was living or was to live.
This evening we enjoy a hands-on cooking class with Chindi Varadarajulu, owner of L’Attitude 49restaurant. Chindi, who grew up in Singapore, moved to Vancouver, BC, and opened the authentically southern Indian restaurant Chutney Villa before calling India home in 2011, will reveal fresh insight into how food is closely influenced by both the country’s religion and culture, and how each region’s character comes into its own in the kitchen. This will be a real epicurean treat and immersion into the connection between food and spirituality.
(Overnight in in Mamallapuram at the Grande Bay Resorts & Spa)
Day 3 Tue, Nov 17: Mamallapuram (B, L)
We will begin our day with an early morning yoga session. Our second yoga class focuses on the Svadhisthana Chakra, which relates to the ability to express yourself with clear boundaries and share your passion.
This morning we will participate in a special interactive session with a Hindu Priest.
Our Priest will perform a Pooja prayer ceremony at the temple tank with sacred chants and Homam for the good health and wealth of the participants.
In Sanskrit Homa or Homam is a ritual where offerings are made into a consecrated fire.
For lunch today we enjoy a Traditional Tamil meal on banana leaves. Tamilnadu has a rich cuisine involving both traditional non-vegetarian and vegetarian dishes.
It is characterized by the use of rice, legumes and lentils. Its distinct aroma and flavour is achieved by the blending of flavourings and spices including curry leaves, mustard, seeds, coriander, ginger, chilli, pepper, cinnamon, green cardamom, cumin, nutmeg, coconut and rosewater.
The traditional way of eating a meal involves sitting on the floor, having the food served on a banana leaf, and using the clean fingers of our right hand to transfer the food to our mouth. After the meal, the fingers are washed, and the banana leaf becomes food for the cows!
This afternoon we will enjoy an auto rickshaw tour to explore village life where, according to traditional beliefs, we will find the soul of India. We will visit a family who all make traditional clay pots using local soil and without any machinery. Afterwards, we can stop by a village temple to see small Pooja and offerings left by the local peoples.
(Overnight in in Mamallapuram at the Grande Bay Resorts & Spa)
Day 4 Wed, Nov 18: Mamallapuram; Tiruvannamalai (B, D)
After our morning yoga practice, which today focuses on the Manipura Chakra (living with vitality & purpose) we will enjoy our breakfast before travelling to Tiruvannamalai, a place known for eternal peace and divinity. The city is proud to possess the sacred shrine of Lord Arunachaleswara (Shiva) and many ashrams, and served as the capital city of the Hoysalas. The town is built around the Arunachaleswara Temple like other Nayak capitals.
Our afternoon visit today is to theArulmigu Arunachaleswara Temple, thought to be the largest temple in the world dedicated to Shiva. The spectacular gopuram (tower) is 66m high and dates from 750AD. We can enjoy the colourful parade of pilgrims as they walk around the perimeter of the temple in order to receive the blessings of Lord Arunachaleswara and we will take part in a special Pooja ritual. In Hindu mythology, Parvati, wife of Shiva, once closed the eyes of her husband playfully in a flower garden at their abode atop Mount Kailash. Although only a moment for the gods, all light was taken from the universe, and the earth, in turn, was submerged in darkness for years. Parvati performed penance along with other devotees of Shiva. Then her husband appeared as a column of fire at the top of Annamalai hills, returning light to the world.
Today is the 3rd day of the 10-day festival of Karthigai Deepam, and this evening we’ll see the Lord Panchamurthigal majestically arriving in procession on the Simha Vahana, the lion chariot. During our time in Tiruvannamalai we’ll witness and be part of these unforgettable festival celebrations.
(Total travel time today: 3.5 hrs)
(Overnight in Tiruvannamalai at the Hotel Sparsa)
Day 5 Thu, Nov 19: Tiruvannamalai (B, D)
Our early morning yoga practicetoday is focused on Anahata Chakra which relates to love and compassion. Then, enjoy a hearty breakfast as this morning we will venture to the two caves – Skandashramam and Virupaksha – onArunachala Holy Mountain. This is the mountain where the guru Ramana Maharshi spent 23 years before moving down to the foot of the hill, where the Ramana Ashram was established.
The peaceful ambience of the cave instantly brings a calming effect on the visitors who reach there after a 30 minute trek. Far from the noise and crowd of the town this is an ideal place for sincere meditation practitioners. The path leads us through lush green surroundings and there is an excellent opportunity for panoramic views of the town and Big Temple below. As we walk, we will breathe in the medicinal herbs found on the hill, as our body falls into a natural state of meditation, rebalancing and finding harmony like it would in an Asana. From our walk we will also see the route for the Giri Pradakshina or “circumambulation of Arunachala Hill”. Thousands upon thousands of pilgrims come to Tiruvannamalai during Karthigai Deepamto walk around the Holy Mountain, stopping at devotional shrines along the way. For those wanting to participate in the 14km circumnavigation tonight with the other pilgrims, this will be an option! It takes about 5 hours.
After our walk we will return to the hotel for lunch and some rest before the afternoon’s activities.
This afternoon we will visit the Ramana Ashram. At the ashram you will have the opportunity to see the Samadhi shrine of Ramana Maharshi, the spot where he attained Mahasamadhi (left his mortal coil), and the Samadhi shrine of his mother, which is known as the Matribhuteshwara Temple.
We will then participate in a group reading (in English) in the Ashram of the Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi, from Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi, or a similar book. Afterwards, we will witness a Veda parayanam – a devoted study of the Veda. The Vedas are considered the highest revelation and authority in Hinduism. Orthodox philosophical systems and religious authorities in India acknowledge their absolute truth and validity for all time, and revere them as the ultimate authority in any controversy.
We complete the late afternoon with a Pooja prayer ritual and can spend some time meditating, absorbing the divinity of this sacred space or buying books at the ashram bookstore before proceeding for dinner.
This evening, the 4th day of the Karthigai Deepam festival, we’ll see the Lord Panchamurthigal arriving on the Kamadhenu Vahanam, the chariot of the divine cow. Alongside him will be the Karpaviruksha tree, which is believed to grant all the wishes that devotees seek without fail.
(Overnight in Tiruvannamalai at the Hotel Sparsa)
Day 6 Fri, Nov 20: Tiruvannamalai (B, D)
Today is the 5th day of Karthigai Deepam, and we will spend the day fully immersed in this most beautiful festival. Kaarthigai Deepam is a festival of lights, celebrated in the Tamil month of Kaarthigai, on the “full moon day” which coincides with the Krithikai star. It is also considered an extension of Deepavali (Diwali).
In Tiruvannamalai the festival spans 10 days and traditionally people clean their houses and in the evening they draw kolams (rangoli) in the front of the house, place lamps on them and light them. They then perform the tradition of Deeparathana (Deeparadhana) where lamps are lit and moved to different places around the house, near doors, windows and balconies.
The overall effect is stunning – streets, houses, buildings all glow red and gold with the thousands of lights illuminating them. As the sun sets ghee (clarified butter) is lit on the summit of mount Arunachala becoming a powerful beacon of light over Tiruvannamalai. Arunachala means “Hill of Wisdom” and Sri Ramana Maharshi described it as being the spiritual heart of the world.
This evening’s procession is breathtaking – we’ll witness Lord Panchamurthigal riding on the 25ft tall silver Rishaba Vahanam (chariot of the Bull), followed by an enormous parasol. A perfect opportunity for photos or to simply feel the collective energy of the festival participants, and a truly exceptional end to our stay in Tiruvannamalai.
(Overnight in Tiruvannamalai at the Hotel Sparsa)
Day 7 Sat, Nov 21: Tiruvannamalai To Madurai (B, L)
We set off early this morning for our drive to Madurai, the oldest city of South India. Madurai is a place of great historical and cultural importance, built around the Meenakshi Amman Temple, which acted as the geographic and ritual centre of the ancient city of Madurai. The city is divided into a number of concentric quadrangular streets around the temple.
This afternoon we will visit theSrirangam Temple, the biggest temple complex in Asia with 21 towers and 7 concentric walls. (Note that non-hindus are not allowed to enter into Sanctum Sanctorum.) We will then visit the Amma Mandapam bathing ghat where we will likely witness “Tarpanam”. Tarpanam is the most critical ritual one can perform for a newly departed relative. It empowers and releases a loved one’s soul for the transition to the afterlife and next birth.
This evening we will check into our hotel and enjoy free time to roam around this colourful and energetic city.
(Total travel time today: 7 hrs)
(Overnight in Madurai at the Fortune Pandiyan Hotel)
Day 8 Sun, Nov 22: Madurai (B)
After breakfast this morning we will make our way to the Meenakshi Amman temple, one of the largest in India, to soak up the atmosphere. Something is always happening here – ceremonies, musicians playing, weddings, prostrating pilgrims, festivals – making it a compelling place to spend time and enjoy temple life. The temple is the geographic and ritual centre of the ancient city of Madurai and divided into a number of concentric quadrangular enclosures contained by high masonry walls. It is one of the few temples in Tamil Nadu to have four entrances facing four directions. This temple has four towers each intricately decorated with thousands of coloured figures while the northern tower is more bare, so as not to tempt the demons. There are eight more towers and a hall with a thousand decorated pillars.
Our next stop this morning is Thirumalai Nayak Palace, an example of architectural grandeur built by King Thirumalai Nayak in 1636 AD. The palace was designed by an Italian Architect and served as the residence of the King. Today, the Palace is famous for its courtyard and the dancing hall as well as the fascinating paintings and sculptures in the shrine.
This afternoon we will enjoy a cycle rickshaw ride to explore the colourful and spectacular city of Madurai. We will see the banana market, cotton weaving industry, vegetable markets and Gandhi Museum.
This evening we will see one of the highlights of the Meenakshi Temple – a night ceremony. An image of Lord Shiva is carried out from his shrine by temple priests, in procession in a chariot, to his wife Meenakshi’s shrine where he’ll spend the night. His gold feet are brought out from her shrine, while his chariot is fanned to keep it cool, and a Puja (worship) is performed, amidst much chanting, drums, horns, and smoke.
(Overnight in Madurai at the Fortune Pandiyan Hotel)
Day 9 Mon, Nov 23: Madurai To Coimbatore (Isha) (B, D)
We begin our day with an early morning yoga practice. Today we focus on Vishuddha Chakra, the throat, and we will practice a mantra as it is said that meditation upon this chakra brings clarity to the past, present and future. With renewed clarity, we will then check out of our hotel and drive to the Yogic Temple (Isha Yoga Center) in the Velliangiri foothills.
The Isha Yoga Center is a non-religious, not-for-profit, public service organization, which addresses all aspects of human wellbeing. From its powerful programs for inner transformation to its inspiring projects for society and environment, Isha activities are designed to create an inclusive culture that is the basis for global harmony and progress. This approach has gained worldwide recognition and is reflected in the Isha Foundation’s special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.
Later this afternoon we will participate in an Introductory Session at the Center.
(Total travel time today: 5.5 hrs)
(Overnight in Coimbatore at the Isha Yoga Center)
Day 10 Tue, Nov 24 – Day 11 Wed, Nov 25: Isha Yoga Center (B, D)
We will spend two days at the Isha Yoga Center and enjoy some of the following activities:
* Hata Yoga Sessions – unique practices like Surya Kriya and Upa Yoga
* Guided tour of the Dhyanlinga Yogic Temple and the Linga Bhairavi Temple
* Take an invigorating dip in the Theerthakund (an energized pool of water)
* Nada Aradhana (an offering of sounds) at the Dhyanalinga Temple
* Initiation into Aumkar meditation
Surya Kriya is a potent yogic practice of tremendous antiquity, designed as a holistic process for health, wellness, and complete inner well-being. “Surya” means “sun,” and “kriya” means “inner energy process.” Surya Kriya activates the solar plexus to raise the samat prana, or solar heat, in the system. It also balances a person’s left and right energy channels, leading to stability of the body and stillness of the mind. This strong foundation becomes the basis to explore higher dimensions of life.
Upa Yoga is a simple yet powerful system of exercise that activates the joints, muscles and energy system. Based on a sophisticated understanding of the body’s mechanics, Upa Yoga releases the inertia in the energy and brings ease to the whole system. Within the human system, the energy flows along 72,000 pathways called nadis. At the joints, the nadis form energy nodes, making the joints storehouses of energy. Upa Yoga activates this energy and also lubricates the joints, creating an instant sense of alertness and liveliness. Upa Yoga essentially means “sub-yoga” or “pre-yoga”. Because of its many immediate and evident benefits, the word Upa Yoga in Indian languages is commonly used to denote “usefulness.”
(Overnight in Coimbatore at the Isha Yoga Center)
Day 12 Thu, Nov 26: Train Ride to Alleppey; Marari (B)
After our final leisurely brunch at the Isha Yoga Center we check out and drive to the railway station to take a train ride to Alleppey. This train journey will be an unforgettable experience thanks to the Indian families we’ll be travelling with, the salesmen, sounds of chai…chai…chai… and the delicious smell of the many Indian snacks being enjoyed.
This evening, after our train ride, we transfer to Marari. You can choose to relax in your hotel room or join us for an optional Kundalini or Restorative Yoga class on the beach under the stars.
(Total travel time today: 6 hrs)
(Overnight in Marari at the Abad Turtle Beach Resort)
Day 13 Fri, Nov 27: Marari (B)
After breakfast this morning we will visit the fishermen of Marari. Every morning dozens of fishing boats come back to the shores of the southern India coast of Kerala, where their catch is auctioned directly on the beach and then sold to factories and local markets. Fishing is still very traditional with nets that are pulled in by hand and no high-tech gadgets used to find the swarms of mackerel and other fish.
This afternoon Michele will lead us in a sharing circle and mediation practice to align the Ajna and all the other Chakras. We will build a deeper sense of intuition, learning to trust it, and will do several brain balancing and energy awareness exercises to help with everyday life. We will then have some free time to walk along the sandy beach or enjoy an Ayurvedic massage.
(Overnight in Marari at the Abad Turtle Beach Resort)
Day 14 Sat, Nov 28: Marari; Alleppey Cruise (B, L)
This morning following breakfast we will travel the short distance to Alleppey for a mesmerizing backwater cruise. We will board a boat for a lazy few hours drifting along shimmering waterways passing coconut groves, a green patchwork of rice paddies and isolated villages where daily life is dominated by the rhythm of the waters. Pass boats laden down with cargo and fishermen casting their nets from small rowing boats; watch small ferry-boats busily crisscrossing the rivers. We will see boats with passengers from all walks of Kerala’s rural life ranging from milkmen and newspaper boys to local politicians, priests and wedding parties. A unique experience that draws us closer to life in this vibrant country.
Later this afternoon we will enjoy our last yoga practice together by the beach and share some fun partner yoga and finish with a touch of India in Savasana.
Free time this evening to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
(Overnight in Marari at the Abad Turtle Beach Resort)
Day 15 Sun, Nov 29: Marari to Cochin (B, D)
After breakfast we check out of our hotel and drive to Cochin, the major port city of the South. Its strategic importance over the centuries is underlined by the sobriquet “Queen of the Arabian Sea”. Informally, Cochin is also referred to as the Gateway to Kerala.
When we arrive we’ll indulge in a sightseeing tour of Fort Kochi: through the old districts of Mattancherry and Fort Cochin where the various European influences are most apparent with merchant houses and old warehouses cramming the waterfront and narrow streets. We’ll take in the Pardesi Synagogue in Jew Town (Closed on Friday & Saturday), St Francis Church, the oldest European church in India, and the highly decorated Santa Cruz Basilica. We’ll admire the colourful murals, including depictions of the Ramayana, in the 16th century Dutch Palace, and linger in the colourful, pungent spice markets before moving on to the much-photographed Chinese nets that line the shore of Fort Cochin.
This afternoon will be free – you can explore the historical beauty of Fort Kochi some more or browse the many stores and stalls for shopping inspiration.
This evening we will watch Kerala’s famous dance-drama, the Kathakali. This dance is characterized by compelling storytelling, elaborate costumes and extensive make-up. After this feast for the eyes, we will celebrate our amazing fifteen days together with another feast, ourFarewell Dinner. We can look back on the adventures of the past two weeks, the temples, sacred sites, natural wonders and feel a great sense of inner peace from our yoga practices and meditations.
(Total travel time today: 2 hrs)
(Overnight in Cochin at the No.18 Hotel)
Day 16 Mon, Nov 30: Depart Cochin for onward flights home
Today, with our energy balanced and a sense of enduring positivity, we say a fond farewell to this amazing country as we depart to Cochin airport to connect with our onward flights home.
Note: This itinerary is subject to change due to conditions beyond our control.
The tour of South India far exceeded my expectations. I was inspired by the history of India, the devotion of its people to their spirituality and the depth of love found in their eyes. One cannot help but grow from this experience.
