The post below contains SPOILERS for the new “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” movie. So, so many spoilers. Click away if you don’t want to see them; if you’ve already seen the move, scroll below the two Hermione GIFs and we’ll begin.

Alright, let’s get started.

OMG HOW GOOD WAS THAT MOVIE?!

As you’ve probably figured out by the disproportional amount of Harry Potter content that finds its way onto this website, you’ll know that I’m a pretty major Harry Potter nerd. I so desperately wanted this movie to deliver, and in my completely
objective
semi-objective opinion, it really did. Would’ve liked to see Eddie Redmayne get a few more lines earlier in the movie, and the two plot lines took a while to converge, but we’re nit-picking. In all, Potter fans will generally walk away from this film happy, excited and relieved.

And how about that surprise twist at the end?

It turns out Percival Graves wasn’t actually Percival Graves at all, it was the dark wizard Grindelwald in disguise, using the cover as Director of Magical Security while he attempts to find and weaponize a powerful obscurus wreaking havoc on New York City.

There was a general vibe throughout the film that something suspicious was going on with Graves, but the biggest give away was about halfway through the film. Graves uses a young boy named Credence to help locate the obscurus (it turns out Credence was the obscurus all along). At one point he hands Credence a necklace — nothing especially interesting about that, except that it’s a necklace with the image of the deathly hallows, the kind we saw Xenophilius Lovegood wear in the Harry Potter movies.

We know from the Harry Potter series that Grindelwald goes in search of the Deathly Hallows — he’s one of the few people that knows it exists at all — so that should have been enough of a giveaway. Indeed, it was for some, but it turns out that wasn’t even the most obvious clue J.K. Rowling sent our way before the big reveal.

That honor goes to the promotional poster below, which has the Deathly Hallows brandishing RIGHT BY HIS FACE. So brazen. It’s right there!

Darn you, J.K. Rowling. You did it again.

Looking ahead, all we can deduce from the film is that Grindelwald knows about the Deathly Hallows. He doesn’t seem to have gone looking for them yet, and if he has, he doesn’t appear to be making much progress if he’s off looking for obscurials in New York.

But either way, the introduction of the Deathly Hallows fits with the timeline Rowling had already given us, and Grindelwald’s pursuit of them suggests where the franchise is heading moving forward.
