Russell Wilson and Ciara were married in Cheshire, England, on July 6, but the decision to hold the ceremony in England wasn’t their first choice. It came in response to North Carolina’s anti-LGBT legislation.

The couple’s wedding planner, Mindy Weiss, spoke to theknotnews.com about the wedding. She revealed that Wilson and Ciara initially planned to get married in North Carolina before looking elsewhere.

Weiss said:

“I did the whole thing — three times. They were first getting married in North Carolina, but they called it off due to the transgender bathroom laws.”

Wilson played football at NC State before transferring to Wisconsin. The couple also considered a wedding in Paris but ultimately chose Peckforton Castle.

North Carolina has come under scrutiny since passing a law requiring transgender individuals to use the public restroom associated with their birth certificates. The NBA moved the All-Star Game out of Charlotte to New Orleans in response to the legislation.
