Chelsea Football Club legend Frank Lampard announced he will be leaving the team in a statement Monday, just a few days before he plays in his third World Cup with the English national team. Lampard came to Stamford Bridge from West Ham in 2001, and proceeded to become arguably the greatest player in the Premier League era.
“When I arrived at this fantastic club 13 years ago I would never have believed that I would be fortunate enough to play so many games and enjoy sharing in so much success. This club has become part of my life and I have so many people to thank for the opportunity.”
Lampard, now 35, conquered Europe in his time with Chelsea. He led the team to three Premier League titles, the 2012 Champions League title, the 2013 Europa League, four FA Cups, two League Cups and two Community Shields. He finished second in World Player of the Year voting in 2005, behind only Ronaldinho. Lampard is the highest scoring midfielder in the history of the Premier League with 171 goals, and trails only Alan Shearer, Andrew Cole and Thierry Henry in the all-time standings. He finishes his Chelsea career as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, with 211. In his statement, Lampard thanked the owners, players, managers and fans for their support over the years.
“Firstly, Ken Bates, who put his neck on the line to sign me as a young player and without him I would not have even begun this experience. Roman Abramovich, the man who saved our club and took us all to new levels. His desire to push the club to the top of the football world has rubbed off on everyone.”

“All the managers and coaches who have helped me develop my game during the time I have been here. I have learnt from every one of them. All the brilliant teammates who I have been lucky enough to train and play alongside for so long. Not just their football qualities but also the friendships I have gained along the way…. The club will move forward, and as a Chelsea man I have no doubt that with the quality of the players that are there, they will continue with the success that we have all enjoyed over the past seasons.”
Lampard’s exit follows the departure of longtime teammate Ashley Cole, who was not given a new contract. Lampard has not confirmed where he will play next, but he is in talks to join David Villa in New York to play for MLS expansion team NYC FC.
Lampard’s influence in the Chelsea midfield dwindled in 2014, and with the likes of young stars Eden Hazard, Oscar, Ramires, André Schürrle and Willian all vying for a place in the starting 11, it was clear Lampard’s time at Stamford Bridge was coming to a close. If he has played his last match in the Premier League, Lampard will leave as one of the most decorated players in the history of the game.
