We have heard a lot of great details in the development of the BMX Supercross facility at Rock Hill, South Carolina in the past year or so. As the facility nears completion, the City of Rock Hill put out a big headline today: Mike King would be brought in from Southern California to run the facility on a full time basis.

Here is the release:

The City of Rock Hill announces the hiring of BMX legend Mike King as Programs Coordinator for the Novant Health BMX SuperCross Track.

King, moves to Rock Hill from Chula Vista, CA, where he previously served as Director for USA Cycling’s BMX Program for the 2008 & 2012 Olympic Games. King’s BMX career started at an early age – he was only 5 when he entered his first race. By the age of 13, he was named American Bicycle Association’s No. 1 amateur. He turned pro at the age of 18. In 1987 King won the Supercross World Championship, and was named ABA No. 1 Pro designation in 1988. In 1989, he was the Grandnational Champion.

While still continuing to dominate the BMX racing scene, King, at 24, started mountain bike racing. During his competitive cycling career, King earned Professional World Championship titles in both BMX and Mountain Biking. King’s accomplishments and contributions to cycling were honored this past November when he was inducted into the US Bicycling Hall of Fame.

“We are excited about having Mike [King] here in Rock Hill and the experience he will bring to our new facility” says David Vehaun, Rock Hill City Manager. “Mike will be instrumental in the development of all of our BMX programs, from beginner programs to international competitions.”

“Mike is one of the most recognized names in BMX and his broad range of experience in the sport will be a huge asset to our track and its future. This will be an incredible opportunity for people in this area to work with such an accomplished BMX racer. I look forward to all of the truly positive things that will emerge from this project” says Thad Fischer, Cycling Coordinator for the City of Rock Hill.

“I am honored to be working for the city of Rock Hill, the Novant Health BMX Supercross facility, and calling South Carolina my new home. I am eager to be involved in the final construction phase so we can open in the spring and showcase a premium BMX venue for everyone to enjoy” says Mike King.

The Novant Health BMX Supercross track is a state of the art facility designed to serve both the beginner and professional BMX riders and will host all types of BMX competitions ranging from local and regional events to national and international events. The Novant Health BMX Track will be the third cycling venue to open at the City’s Rock Hill Outdoor Center, joining the Giordana Velodrome and the mountain bike trails. The BMX Track is scheduled to open in late spring of this year.

We are definitely looking forward to our first trip to Rock Hill, and to the awesome program Mike will be creating from scratch at the facility.
