Nearly 200 businesses have been named and shamed after failing to pay the minimum wage to staff, in the largest list ever published by the Government to date, reports The Independent.
The Government released the named of 198 employers who failed to pay their employees the legal minimum wage of £7.20 per hour, introduced in April. The new rate would see some employees receiving a pay rise of more than £900 a year.
Overall companies owed more than £466,000 to their employees across a wide range of sectors.
Brighton and Gove Albion and Blackpool FC football clubs were among those named on the list among other businesses including hotels, care homes and hairdressers.
Business minister Margot James said it was not acceptable that some employers failed to pay at least the minimum wage their workers were entitled to.
“We’ll continue to crack down on those who ignore the law, including by naming and shaming them,” she said.
Conor D’Arcy, policy analyst at the Resolution Foundation, praised the Government for stepping up and shaming employers who break the law, calling the level of underpayment “eye-watering” in some of the cases.
“There is no excuse for any employer to dodge paying the minimum wage.
“It’s particularly concerning to see so many firms among the usual suspects of hairdressing, nursery and elderly care who are illegally under-paying their staff,” he said.
TUC, the trade union representing the vast majority of organised workers, called for more prosecution for the worst offenders.
“We know that thousands more rogue employers are cheating their staff and getting away with it. The government must redouble their enforcement efforts.
“The minimum wage is set to rise in the coming months. Employers must ensure that they’re paying all staff what they are legally entitled to,” said Frances O’Grady, TUC general secretary.
Sports Direct, the British retailing group was absent of the list despite its founder Mike Ashley admitting his company has broken the law by falling to pay the national minimum wage to his employees.
A spokesperson for the Department of Business, Energy & Industry Strategy said all the companies mentioned on the list were only those that have already been investigated and have since paid back the money they owed. The department declined to comment on specific cases.
The Government introduced the naming and shaming scheme in October 2013, making it simpler to name employers who do not comply with the minimum wage rules.
A new policy is expected to raise the minimum wage for the over-25s to approximately £9 an hour by 2020.
