In our vibrant culinary city, restaurants and food trucks have mastered veggie burgers in every way, shape and form, giving us endless options for this delightful main dish. From a grilled Portobello mushroom, to black beans and chickpeas, to a secret blend of organic vegetables and spices with every set of toppings you could imagine, these five places have got you covered.

Café Deux Soleils

From the grill | @cafedeuxsoleils

Located on energetic Commercial Drive, Café Deux Soleils has just the right combination of delectable burgers and enjoyable entertainment. They are home to live music nights, poetry slams, stand-up comedy, and open mic nights. They even host a wonderful weekend brunch. Their grand array of veggie burgers made from homemade patties and topped with delicious options makes it hard to choose just one. My recommendation is the Mexi Burger, which is topped with fresh tomato salsa and banana peppers for a bit of a kick. Or, try the Pesto Burger, made with the restaurant’s own basil-almond pesto. They also have a great selection of child-friendly options as well, making it a great place to take the whole family.

The Loving Hut

Ultimate in drippy squishy | @lovinghutvancouver

This Yaletown based gourmet food truck offers tasty and nourishing cuisine made from wholesome, plant-based ingredients. Their specialty is creating vegan burgers with meat substitutes that are hard to distinguish from the real thing. Try the Bacon Cheese Burger, loaded with so much flavour and juicy goodness you’ll be full for the whole day, or the Crispy Chick’n packs loads of crunch. All of the Loving Hut’s condiments and sauces are made from scratch and they use local and organic produce as much as possible. This popular food truck is regularly parked outside the Roundhouse Community Centre in Yaletown but keep an eye on Twitter for their updates and events!

Tera V Burger

Thick and juicy | @teravburger

At Tera V Burger, their goal is to have every aspect of the business be the least harmful for their customers and the environment. This means ingredients that are locally sourced, clean and nutritious; materials that are recyclable or compostable; and using natural and biodegradable products. Keeping this in mind, their impressive selection of veggie burgers will have you feeling good about your choice. Their No Bull Burger has been voted Vancouver’s best burger by Le Burger Week and I can see why. This quintessential cheese burger is bursting with flavour and topped with the freshest produce. If you’re feeling more adventurous and want to stray from a classic veggie burger, try the Fiesta Tempeh Burger made form organic tempeh and topped with tangy salsa, fresh veggies and cheese. Yum!

Heirloom

Veggie or vegan | @heirloomveg

If you have been around the block with veggie burgers and want something unique and upscale, Heirloom is the place to go. They support local farmers and businesses as much as possible and they provide healthy plant-based food that makes you feel good after eating it. Try the Royale Cheese Burger, an heirloom patty topped with caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, garlic aioli, iceberg lettuce, pickled cabbage and aged white cheddar served on a brioche bun. Is your mouth watering yet? And if you’re looking for a vegan option, the Veggie Supreme Burger is just as satisfying. Their classic patty is accompanied by eggplant aioli, avocado, sprouts, tomato, red onion and pickled cucumber ribbons served on a fresh multigrain bun. Either burger goes perfectly with a side of fresh made yam fries.

Meet on Main

So thick you need a knife | @meetonmain

Are you hungry yet? All burgers at Meet on Main (or in Gastown) are comfort food at its finest. They have come up with new and interesting ways to serve up a heavenly vegan burger. I suggest you try the Marinated Portobello Burger, a grilled and marinated Portobello mushroom topped with a house-made chipotle mayo, grilled onions, roasted red pepper and polished off with their signature feta and pea pesto. But my personal favourite is the ultimate combination. The Mac’N’Cheez Burger is a smoked patty topped with their famous vegan mac’n’cheez, pickled jalapenos, chipotle mayo and two crispy onion rings. Two of my favourite meals in one – this is what dreams are made of!

Veggie burgers used to be an afterthought created as a second option to salad for customers who preferred a plantbased option. The progress on the once simple, vegetable-based patty with boring toppings has been profound. Now it seems Vancouver restaurants are in a secret competition to see who makes the best. Popular chain restaurants such as JOEY, Cactus Club and Earls have joined the competition and offer impressive veggie burger options. Heads up for vegans though, not all veggie burgers are created equal – many are made with egg whites and cheese powder to hold them together – so ask your server to get details from the kitchen.
