The Three Amigos presents their first full-length installment of the Weight List featuring George Lockhart and Dan Leith discussing a multitude of topics with our own Iain Kidd.

Diet and nutrition are vital parts of an athlete's training, and in a sport like MMA, where weight cuts make all the difference, it pays to be well informed. The buck doesn't stop there, though. People from all walks of life are trying to dial in a more health conscious attitude, perhaps now, more than ever. With scientific studies and data coming in from all angles, thanks to the digital age, there's a metric ton of information that needs to be sorted through, which presents a daunting challenge for many.

The Three Amigos Podcast hopes to remove the guesswork from that data sifting via our excellent weekly segment, The Weight List, featuring weight cutting and nutrition specialist, George Lockhart and our own Iain Kidd, has been a show staple for the past year, and has covered many topics in a condensed, easy listening, 15-minute weekly episode. This week, Iain and George brought Fitness VT partner, Daniel Leith into the fold for the first full-length installment of the Weight List.

Here are a few quotes from the 80 minute feature, along with some bullet point topics with minute markers for your convenience. As always, we hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording.

Iain Kidd: Something people tend to look for are quick, easy answers. In dieting, as in most things, the quick, easy answers usually aren't the best, but sometimes people only have time for one thing. The advice I tend to give in a hurry is replace much of the red meat you eat with salmon & spinach. What small bits of advice do you give people when time is tight?

Number one: water. It's not sexy, but 3% dehydration can result in a 30% decrease in performance -George Lockhart

George Lockhart: Number one: water. It's not sexy, but 3% dehydration can result in a 30% decrease in performance. People say, ‘Well, I'm not an athlete,' but when we talk about performance we're also talking about your metabolism. Drinking more water will give you more energy, which will allow you to burn more calories.

Stay ahead of the hunger. If you're not hungry, that's the best time to eat. Now you're in charge of eating what you need to eat, and how much you eat. If you're starving you end up in a place where your hunger dictates what you eat. You'll overindulge and eat the salty and sugary food your body is craving.

Dan Leith: Any time I have five minutes to spend with someone, the biggest piece of advice I give them is to cook their own food. Just prepare your own food from natural, whole-food ingredients. I was listening to a podcast from a doctor around a year ago, and he said he tells his patients, ‘Eat whatever you want, just make it yourself,' because they're not going to go home and make a Twinkie from scratch. I thought that was brilliant, because it's so true.

When someone is hungry and they're on the move, they'll reach for that processed Twinkie, or that processed quick food which is loaded with refined sugar and things that our body has a very difficult time processing. The easiest way to avoid that is to just prepare your food yourself and take the time to prepare your meals for the week with some whole food ingredients.
