When I was pregnant with my second child about a year ago, I made the decision that it was time to upgrade to a double stroller. I started perusing through all of the best double stroller reviews to find a model that would accommodate my growing toddler as well as the newborn that was on the way. After sorting through dozens of models with many different features, I was finally able to narrow down the top 10 double strollers that balanced ease of use, maneuverability, storage, comfort and security for my children, as well as being lightweight and easy for me to handle by myself.

While a lot of double stroller reviews focused on accessories like trays and cup holders, I found that the most important aspects for a model to be considered on my list of best double baby strollers were solid construction, wheels that turned smoothly and easily, seats that could handle either an infant or a larger child, and seats that both could recline as well as be protected from the sun. It was only after thoroughly going through all of the reviews that I could find, that I was able to narrow down my top 10 list to the very best double baby strollers for sale on the market today. There is the perfect double stroller out there for you, your family and your budget.

Different Types of Double Strollers

Pushing two children around is never easy, and it's especially difficult when you've got two children of different physical abilities and sizes like I do. Whether you're planning on finding a top rated double stroller for use on quick trips around the neighborhood, or for longer trips and vacations, there are a few aspects that are critical to take into consideration:

Double Stroller for Travel

Whether you're looking for the best double strollers for travel, it doesn't really matter whether you're thinking of using them at an amusement park or for airline travel. All of the top 10 double strollers that are marketed for travel fold up small enough to fit into an overhead compartment on a plane or in the back seat or trunk of a compact car.

Double Jogging Stroller

If you are a mom who exercises and you like to include your kids, there are must haves when it comes to choosing a jogging stroller. Safety and comfort are of the utmost importance, and not all models of double jogging strollers are able to check that box off. Find out which ones are.

Double Reclining Stroller

You can't always schedule your daily activities and never ending to-do list around nap times! Like the other types of models, safety and comfort are at the top of the priority list for a great double reclining stroller. Because nap time can't wait!

Best Double Stroller Brands

The competition for the best double strollers for twins or two young children is pretty fierce but the company Delta came out slightly on top. They seem to have mastered the art of the perfect balance between lightweight and convenience with the need for stability, maneuverability and extra features that make taking care of two young children slightly easier. Other very popular brands include Chicco, Baby Trend, Summer Infant and Graco.

Top 5 Best Double Strollers

Sometimes it felt easier to eliminate the strollers that I didn't like than to narrow down the strollers that I felt deserved to be at the top of my list. After careful consideration of price, options, "engineering", weight, and extra features, I carefully whittled down my choices to the five you see below.

Delta Children LX Side by Side Tandem Umbrella Stroller

Incredibly lightweight, the Delta Children LX Side by Side Tandem is simultaneously extremely sturdy. The six front wheels come with their own shock absorber system that does a nice job of smoothing out little bumps and jolts. There's a cup holder for the parent/pusher and a very large amount of storage room in the two big bags that hang off of the rear of the stroller.

Despite the fact that it's a tandem or side-by-side stroller, the Delta Children LX still fits through standard doorways and is a cinch to maneuver in crowded restaurants or grocery store aisles. The children are nicely secured with a five-point harness that has padding on the straps for maximum comfort. Probably the best feature of the Delta Children LX Side by Side Tandem is that it folds up "umbrella style" when it's time to put it away, and it only takes a second. There's a "European-style" visor for the two kids which does a fairly good job of keeping the sun out of their faces and the stroller glides like a dream even with two kids of dramatically different sized on board.

Kolcraft Cloud Side by Side Umbrella Stroller

Perfect for a summer vacation to the theme park, the Kolcraft Cloud Side by Side has a special section in the rear of each seat that can be rolled up to allow for more air to pass through the mesh an keep your children cool. The parent/pusher gets a nice little cupholder for keeping a cool drink on hand or for storing your keys and phone.

Both of the seats can be reclined and the Kolcraft Cloud Side by Side is sturdy enough to accommodate two children weighing 35 pounds apiece. The kids are kept securely in place with a 3-point harness system. Probably my favorite part of the Kolcraft Cloud Side by Side is the really big canopy that each kid gets which can be adjusted separately to provide almost complete shade even on a hot day. And then when it's time to fold up the stroller, just pull a strap and go. Excellently constructed, the Kolcraft Cloud Side by Side weighs an astonishing 21 pounds, making it one of the most lightweight double strollers around.

JOOVY Caboose Ultralight Graphite Stroller

Available in yellow, red, aqua or black, the JOOVY Caboose Ultralight is an excellent investment for any growing family. If you've got an infant like I do, the front seat can attach to any car seat or you can have both kids ride in the standard seat. If you've got a growing toddler, the back seat can be converted to a "sit and stand" design with a little bench seat for sitting and a platform for standing and being more mobile.

Extremely lightweight, the JOOVY Caboose Ultralight clocks in at just 22 pounds when empty. The wheels on the JOOVY Caboose Ultralight are some of the best I've ever seen, turning smoothly with nary a rattle or wobble. The parent/pusher gets their own organizer pockets and two cup holders, which is a nice feature. The in-line design is great for threading the needle in crowded amusement parks or grocery stores. I also really liked the huge canopy that can keep your child protected from the sun. And when it comes time to putting the JOOVY Caboose Ultralight away, it folds down to a very small shape that's easy to stash away in a trunk or back seat of a car.

Maclaren Twin Triumph

The Maclaren Twin Triumph comes in one of two neutral colors, but it is truly a beautiful double stroller. Weighing just 23 pounds when empty, it's plenty lightweight enough for even a petite mom to pick up and carry. With a tandem design, the Maclaren Twin Triumph is still narrow enough to fit through most doorways or squeeze in next to a table at the restaurant. An added bonus is the included rain cover which not only keeps out water but also provides your kids protection on a windy day.

Each child gets their own retractable hood on the Maclaren Twin Triumph and the seats can be reclined to one of several different positions. The frame of the Maclaren Twin Triumph is aircraft grade aluminum so it's very sturdy and it feels incredible rugged. Another nice feature is that the seats can be popped out easily and thrown in the washing machine for a quick clean-up. There's a very large basket underneath that will hold all the supplies you need for when you're taking two young children out in public.

Delta Children City Street Side by Side Stroller

Extremely lightweight at just 19 pounds, the Delta Children City Street Side by Side is incredibly easy to fold up, carry, or fit into an overhead bin on a plane. It's also constructed to fit through standard 30-inch doorways. With a simple hood for each child, the sun protection is adequate. I really liked the parent cup holder which can easily handle a big drink .

Built to CPSC, JPMA and ASTM standards, the Delta Children City Street Side by Side folds up with a single motion into a very compact shape. There's a storage bag on the back for supplies and it pushes very easily. Although the wheels are smaller than some other models, they turn very well and never wobble or stick. Probably the best part of this stroller is just how lightweight it is and easy to use when you're out and about with your kids.

Double Stroller Buying Guide

When shopping for a double stroller, be sure to consider the following:

Weight - With two kids on board, the stroller is going to be heavy. A lightweight stroller is not just essential when you're pushing it but also when it comes time to folding it up, carrying it while the kids play, or hoisting it up into an overhead compartment on an airplane.

Ease of Maneuverability - Sometimes stroller manufacturers are so focused on being lightweight and easy to fold up that they skimp on wheel quality and balance. A good double stroller should glide easily over the ground and never make you worry about jamming or freezing up if you hit a bump.

Seat Comfort and Safety - Obviously, two children are going to be wiggling and moving around a lot, so you want to make sure they're safely secured in the stroller, whether that's with an infant car seat or some kind of harness. Comfort is also important, and the top rated double strollers have deeply cushioned seats and padded harnesses.

Storage - With two kids on board, you're going to need lots of snacks, diapers, and other baby supplies, to say nothing of purchases you might make along the way. The best double strollers for twins or two young children will include plenty of storage underneath and in the back for all of your gear.

Folding Up and Carrying - Getting two children in and out of the car or watching them when they're out of the stroller is necessarily going to take up most of your attention and energy. The best double strollers fold up easily with a single motion, have a carrying strap, and are easy for even a petite mom to handle by herself.

Trays and Cup holders - While you can certainly get a lot of mileage out of any double stroller that doesn't have a tray or cup holder, and your stroller will be a pound or two lighter, it's really nice to have a little tray when it comes time to feeding your kids. And I like to have a cup holder to store a bottle or two of juice, especially handy when you're using your double stroller for a summer vacation.

When it comes time to finding the right stroller for your growing family, the best thing to do is set aside some time and read all of the best double stroller reviews that you can find. Compare the experiences of others and see what features the parents like the best. For my money, the best double strollers are lightweight, built well so that they are easy to maneuver, fit through doorways and can navigate packed grocery store aisles, have plenty of storage onboard, provide good shade protection for the kids, have each seat recline to different positions, and maybe also include a few extra features like a snack tray and/or cupholder for the pusher/parent.

When you have two kids and are looking for a stroller, it pays to invest in quality. You're likely to be using the stroller for years to come so consider the future needs of your kids as well as their needs right now. If you're like me and starting out with an infant who does best in her car seat, look for strollers that allow for easy conversion to seating for both kids and perhaps even a sit and stand option for the bigger kid as s/he gets older. Take your time and do your research, and you'll be sure to find the right stroller for your needs, budgets, and desires.
