One of the most far-reaching, yet underreported and sporadically covered, issues is the legalization of marijuana. Some 43 years of being listed as a Schedule 1 narcotic, public opinion favoring the legalization of marijuana has grown dramatically.

Today, medical marijuana is legal in 18 states and Washington, D.C., and voters in Colorado and Washington have legalized the drug for recreational use. These laws, however, operate in direct conflict with federal law, which regards possession as a crime.
