Leonardo DiCaprio wins his first SAG award for The Revenant, as several black actors including Idris Elba and Viola Davis win statues tonight

Red carpet fashion at the 2016 Screen Actors Guild awards – in pictures

3.06am GMT

Well, that’s it. Spotlight takes home the big award, making it another strong contender for the Best Picture Oscar, though the Producers Guild winner, The Big Short, remains the favorite. Since the Oscars went to 10 Best Picture nominees, the winner has always won the Producers Guild Award as well.

3.02am GMT

Mark Ruffalo describes the story of the Catholic sex abuse scandal as “one of the most horrific things our culture has allowed to happen.” Michael Keaton references the disenfranchised, including those in Flint, Michigan.

Demi Moore presents the award for Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture. It feels like it’s been years since I’ve seen Demi Moore.

2.58am GMT

Still no wins for the bear.

I really hope Johnny Depp wins for playing Jack Nicholson in The Departed.

“Watching your movies made me feel less alone.” Larson’s boyfriend gets caught on camera mouthing “I love you too.” What a sweetheart.

2.46am GMT

Cate Blanchett, Carol
Brie Larson, Room
Helen Mirren, Woman in Gold
Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn
Sarah Silverman, I Smile Back

2.44am GMT

I assume they won because their costumes are older than the ones the Mad Men cast wore. As you would expect, the British cast of Downton Abbey was quite humble.

2.41am GMT

Downton Abbey
Game of Thrones
Homeland

2.40am GMT

Julia Louis Dreyfus and Keegan Michael Key introduce an award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series together because they’re both comedians and they both have three names, I guess?

2.26am GMT

Idris Elba and Abraham Atta present the clip for Beasts of No Nation, noting the diversity of this awards show. Consider the shade thrown.

2.25am GMT

“Why do I have to be a hero? Why do you have to like me? Why do I have to be a mentor?” A fair set of questions. Often, black actors have to represent the best of their culture on screen, but it’s equally as important to show all sides of blackness in pop culture.

2.23am GMT

I honestly don’t know anyone who watches Dowton Abbey, but I am sure there are plenty of Americans who can’t get enough of an English accent.

2.21am GMT

Claire Danes, Homeland
Viola Davis, How to Get Away With Murder
Julianna Marguiles, The Good Wife
Maggie Smith, Downton Abbey
Robin Wright, House of Cards

2.21am GMT

Whatever else to be said about #sagawards, Carol Burnett’s generous and moving speech as good as it gets in television.

2.19am GMT

So glad Carol Burnett was finally able to meet Eddie Redmayne

2.15am GMT

Steve Carell helps Burnett onto the stage. “Tina and Amy, you just touched my heart. You guys are the whole ball of wax,” she says. “Back in the covered wagon days, they had double features.” She mentions that “The network tried to talk me into a half-hour sitcom called ‘Here’s Agnes’” and that they said that “comedy/variety is a man’s game.”

2.10am GMT

Up next, a montage of Carol Burnett clips, interspersed with interviews with Ellen DeGeneres and Jane Lynch.

2.06am GMT

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Carol Burnett, one of the great comic minds of her time. They remind us how difficult comedic acting is. “Carol is better than all of us. We’re gonna give her a prize for it.” -- Amy Poehler

2.03am GMT

Bryan Cranston, Diane Lane, and Helen Mirren present the clip for Trumbo. Despite this being one of the least seen awards contenders this year, Cranston’s work elevates it.

1.51am GMT

Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, and Michael Keaton introduce the clip for Spotlight. Keaton muscled McAdams away from the mic like a hungry schoolboy in line at the cafeteria.

1.50am GMT

This is her second win for this category. She does a few curls with her trophy, which was, again, as hilarious as it sounds. She thanks her “brothers in the struggle.” She also thanks her “acting consultant,” which is an exciting new career for all of you kids to consider as you graduate from college!

1.47am GMT

Nicole Kidman, Grace of Monaco
Queen Latifah, Bessie
Christina Ricci, The Lizzie Borden Chronicles
Susan Sarandon, The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe Kristen Wiig, The Spoils Before Dying

1.46am GMT

Ana Ferris and Anthony Mackie present the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries. But first, they recognize American servicemen. Nicole Kidman was nominated for Grace of Monaco, which I think we all agree was terrible.

1.45am GMT

President Howard introduces a video montage of scenes from film and TV exalting the virtues of the acting profession. They cut to a scene from Zach Braff’s last movie and I almost spit up my pizza. At least there’s plenty of diversity in this montage. I think I saw Mario Van Peebles.

1.42am GMT

SAG’s president Ken Howard thanks all the other unions in Hollywood. The SAG Awards are easily the best awards show put on by a union since the Pipe Fitters’ Local 123 gave Timmy Barton the “Best Burp” trophy at the Memorial Day Cookout.

1.40am GMT

The very things that handicap Netflix at the Emmys and Oscars make it a huge force at the #sagawards.

1.35am GMT

Idris trips up the stairs and reveals that he got his SAG card for a performance in Law & Order. Thanks “Ted Something from Netflix.” Can we just let him play James Bond? At least once? “We made a film about real people and real lives.”

1.33am GMT

Michael Shannon’s performance in 99 Homes is over-the-top and steals a modest film from Andrew Garfield. I interviewed him last year for Grantland.

1.32am GMT

Christian Bale, The Big Short
Idris Elba, Beasts of No Nation
Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies
Michael Shannon, 99 Homes
Jacob Tremblay, Room

1.32am GMT

I just googled how to spell “Saoirse Ronan” so that I could write about how she’s presenting Outstanding Male Actor in a Supporting Role.

1.31am GMT

We’ve got a gallery of the red carpet fashions - take a look.

1.31am GMT

The cast of Straight Out of Compton presents their clip for Oustanding Cast in a Drama, “exposing life in the hood and starting a social revolution that still reverberates today.” It would be quite a statement for SAG to give this film their highest honor, after the snub from the Academy.

1.29am GMT

Well deserved victory. She has quite a hard time keeping it together during her acceptance speech. This is her first go at the awards circuit. She mentions her mom is an actress and “loved to watch her rehearse, loved to watch her perform.” She describes a “sudden thrill” of collaboration. “That magic only happens between acting companions.” She concludes by thanking the trans community and her family.

1.26am GMT

Alicia Vikander had a truly amazing year, between Danish Girl and Ex Machina. Hard to say which performance was better.

One of my favorite things about the SAG Awards is that the entire cast gets to come up and enjoy the moment. “This is what we talk about when we talk about diversity.” -- Laura Prepon.

Can we put The Big Bang Theory to bed? #SAGAwards

1.15am GMT

1.14am GMT

Christian Bale and Steve Carell, co-stars of The Big Short, introduce a clip for their film, which is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. This feels to me like the favorite going into the Oscars.

1.12am GMT

“The most amazing cast...except for Jason” -- Jeffrey Tambor, deftly avoiding a socially awkward moment.

1.11am GMT

Jason Bateman says, “Get up here, Dad,” in reference to their days in the cast of Arrested Development. My wife says, “That made me want to cry.”

1.10am GMT

Louis CK., Louie
William H. Macy, Shameless

1.08am GMT

The SAG Awards are already blacker than the Oscars with the victory for Aduba’s performance as Crazy Eyes on Orange Is the New Black.

1.06am GMT

The show began tonight with actors in the crowd, including Rami Malek, explaining what made them become actors.

1.04am GMT

Jon Hamm is the most charming person in the world and it makes me so mad. When will it be my time, Lord?

1.03am GMT

Let’s pray that no one gets Raj Koothrappali and Kumail Nanjiani mixed up again.

1.00am GMT

The awards have started and I (Alex Needham) am handing over to our Dave Schilling. Take it away, Dave!

1.00am GMT

Awards shows are half about trophies and half about dresses, I suppose.

12.57am GMT

Leonardo DiCaprio in the house, with slicked-back hair. He looks like he could do with a bit of lipsalve. He describes The Revenant as an “epic art house film” and he says he wants to make more movies like it.

12.56am GMT

Leonardo DiCaprio met with the Pope last week. Where is the Sean Penn/El Chapo photo for THAT?

12.46am GMT

Finally an awards ceremony the Guardian can get behind

SAG is filled with trade unionists! This red carpet is filled with Reds! Reds!!!!!!

12.45am GMT

“In LA, you never put real clothes on” -- Rooney Mara. Um, ok. Sure. Whatever you say, ma’am. I wear sweatpants to funerals.

12.43am GMT

I’ll soon be handing over to our Dave Schilling who is in LA, although watching this on the telly, much like myself.

12.41am GMT

Kate Winslet is on the red carpet and just spotted herself on screen. “I’m pleased with how I look - well done me,” she announces. Which is nice. In other news, her favourite emojis are “the poo one and the chicken one.” This morning, Michael Fassbender sent her the shrimp one.

12.39am GMT

Kate and Rooney Mara are on the red carpet, looking elegant in plunging Valentino dresses. “Do these dresses describe who you are?” asks our host. “No,” say the Maras unsurprisingly.

12.36am GMT

A prediction from impartial12 in the comments:

DiCaprio will win, and no amount of cries claiming racism is going to diminish that achievement.

12.30am GMT

Saoirse Ronan looks glam in a translucent pink sheath by Michael Kors, if that doesn’t make her sound too much like a condom. She’s up for Brooklyn. She’s in living in New York at the moment as she’s about to be in The Crucible, directed by Ivo van Hove, whose last project was Lazarus, the musical co-written by David Bowie.

12.28am GMT

Not sure these tears were entirely sincere

12.25am GMT

This is interesting. Can it win tonight?

#SAGAwards box office: @ComptonMovie has earned more that double all the other top nominees combined w/$202M worldwide, incl $161M in U.S.

12.23am GMT

It’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson, nominated for Modern Family. They’re talking about Barbra Streisand, who did a voiceover on Modern Family. “Very exciting,” he avers. He’s wearing Armani and Chopard diamond cufflinks, for those who are into that.

12.16am GMT

And here’s Idris Elba, who’s up for three gongs. “I’m feeling very sexy about it – it’s good because it’s my peers,” he says. He gives a sweet shout-out to his drama teacher, and says that getting his SAG card was the biggest moment of his life. SAG, of course, is the performers’ trade union.

12.13am GMT

Rami Malek is up for a gong for Mr Robot, which won two gongs at the Golden Globes a few weeks ago. His date is his publicist – there is a man who knows which side his bread is buttered.

12.08am GMT

Brie Larson, nominated (and hotly tipped) for Room, is trussed up in a slightly odd Versace dress, “the first one I put on” after flying in from Australia.

12.05am GMT

It’s Alicia Vikander, nominated for The Danish Girl. She’s also in sequins – Louis Vuitton ones at that.

11.54pm GMT

Bryan Cranston is on the red carpet - he’s one of the best actor nominees, for Trumbo. He’s wearing a Burberry tux, the company that’s just ruffled feathers for getting Brooklyn Beckham to shoot their new perfume campaign. He pretended to shed a tear when being shown an early role of his in Baywatch.

11.47pm GMT

The bad behaviour has already started

Looks like #BradleyWhitford got a little grabby at the @SAGawards . #SAGAwards2016 #SAGAwards pic.twitter.com/pFVF7oIvb1

11.46pm GMT

It’s Gaby Hoffman from Transparent who’s in a glamorous custom-made sequinned gown which she describes as “a little 80s lounge singer.”

11.44pm GMT

If you want to see a list of nominees, by the way, they’re here. We’ll be adding the winners as the night wears on.

11.41pm GMT

Ellie Kemper, surely a good bet for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, is sashaying down the red carpet. She’s wearing a Peter Pilotto gown that the describes as “pretty cool ... I am very cool,” she sarcastically, but still rather adorably adds.

11.36pm GMT

Laverne Cox is looking pretty spectacular on the red carpet.

Sarah Hyland made the "Angelina Jo-leg" joke, but Laverne Cox is the one who's delivering it. -H #SAGAwards2016 pic.twitter.com/4AO4kJEddq

11.33pm GMT

Now it’s Christina Hendricks and her husband Geoffrey Arend on the red carpet. It’s all back to theirs after the awards, apparently. Mad Men is up for outstanding performance by an ensemble for its final season.

11.28pm GMT

It’s the Screen Actors Guild awards, the latest staging post on the way to the Oscars. However, with this year seeing the Academy mired in controversy for failing to nominate any actors of colour, the SAGs have a golden opportunity to make the Oscars look very stuffy indeed. Beasts of No Nation and NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton are both nominated, and there are two nods for Idris Elba, for Beasts and Luther (since TV acting awards are also given out tonight). As my colleague Andrew Pulver continued in his story about tonight’s show:

In the female actor categories, Queen Latifah is up for Bessie, a biopic of the blues singer Bessie Smith, Viola Davis for legal drama series How to Get Away With Murder and Uzo Aduba for her role as Crazy Eyes Warren in the prison show Orange Is the New Black.
