It was the news we all feared — Matt Harvey will have Tommy John surgery.
The Mets announced Friday in a statement:
After further consultation with doctors, Mets pitcher Matt Harvey has elected to have surgery to repair a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
It was just a few weeks ago that Harvey said he would forego immediate surgery and try to rehab the elbow with a two-month throwing program. Well, Harvey never reported to Port St. Lucie to begin that program. Instead, he was undergoing physical therapy at the dreaded Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. James Andrews, the inventor of the procedure, will perform the operation later this month.
So now it is official that Matt Harvey will miss the entire 2014 season. While this is obviously a huge blow, at least Sandy Alderson knows not to count on him and can plan accordingly.
