Blog commenting is a good way to get your name out there as a new blogger and can be a great way to become an active part of a blog’s community. But, we’ve either all seen it or been guilty of a certain blog commenting mistake – the “Great post” comment. On one level, you’d take that as a compliment, but on another level altogether it really brings nothing to the conversation and can say a lot about you as a blogger as well as the blog on which you commented.
View Blog Commenting as “Free” Advertising
For numerous reasons, blog commenting can be seen as a great way to grow your blog as a new blogger. There is no cost (well, ok, it costs you time) and you can dictate what exactly you’ll say. The problem arises when someone leaves the “great post” comment, or something of that variety that the benefit is lost.
Just picture yourself reading through a blog post and getting to the comments section. You see numerous constructive comments and then you see someone saying simply “Good post”. At what point do you think to yourself, this person has something great to say and I’m going to click on his site to read more…yea, probably never. On the other hand, blog commenting, when done right, can be a great way to bring some referral traffic your way and is a nice benefit of leaving an insightful comment.
What Makes a “Good” Blog Comment?
So, how do you avoid this blog commenting mistake? It’s quite simple really, you want to provide something that’s going to add to the conversation that’s already going on. You can do things such as:
Ask a question in relation to the content
Take an opposing, yet still respectful view
Add something that the author might have left out
This is not to mean that you need to add a comment that’s the length of a blog post, but it also doesn’t mean adding something that can come across as comment spam. I believe that a “good” comment can be somewhat subjective, but there also some basic elements that many would agree on. If in doubt, ask yourself what would be something you’d like to see on your site and implement that in your blog commenting.
Look for Other Ways to Be a Part of their Community
I’ll readily admit that I don’t have much time in the day to comment on blogs the way I’d like. The key to remember though is that there are other ways to be a part of their community other than through blog commenting. In all honesty, there are quite a number of ways you can be a part of the community, such as:
Sharing the post via social media
Mentioning the post in a post of yours on a related topic it covered
Including the post in a round up
The point is that while blog commenting is a great way to be an active member of the blogging community, as well as to grow your blog there are other ways to contribute. Many of those ways can benefit you much more than being guilty of the “Great post” mistake.
