Jazz Mang is a hair and makeup artist originally from South Korea, now based in Berlin. She works for magazines including Vogue, Elle, Grazia, Rolling Stones Magazines and has done hair and makeup for many celebrities. We were honoured to have the opportunity to work with Jazz on last German Press Days in Berlin.
You’ve done such beautiful work on so many celebrities like Cynthia Nixon, Sheryl Crow, Tracy Chapman or even Johnny Depp. What is the most memorable job you have done?
My personal highlight was when I met Tracy Chapman. I had developed the habit, when I did the makeup to count my worksteps loudly. Tracy was very amused und told me, I resembled her sister, who would do the same. Apparently she found that fact so funny, that she talked about my counting tic at Tempodrom to thousands of fans.
What are the three best aspects about being a (celebrity) makeup artist?
1. For me, applying product is more painting than doing makeup. I love to create an expression on a plain models face for a special theme, as if it were a blank canvas. It’s a challenge every single time, but I love it.
2. To explore new places and rooms. I’m very interested in interior design, so it’s an enriching and interesting experience for me to see, how other persons live and how they arranged their homes.
3. Meeting celebrities from the film and music industries, to work with them, to get to know each other and to talk about everything and anything – or even to remain silent. Most of them have been so warm hearted or surprisingly restrained (in a positive way).
What is your ultimate beauty rule you live by?
Since a few years, I try to avoid sugar and drink Bio Wheat Grass every day. You feel fit and your skin feels better. I don’t smoke and drink alcochol.
Which modern-day beauties do you admire?
I admire all women who wake up in the morning and look perfect right away. Especially those lucky women who have perfect eyebrows. My eyebrows are not very full and I must draw the contours of them every single morning. I would certainly give everything to have eyebrows like Cara Delivigne.
Describe your style in five words.
Black, minimalistic, strict, casual, now and then color explosions in spring and summer.
You told me your signature style is the ‘Glow effect’. What do you like most about it and how do you create it?
I love some glow effect on the skin. It looks cool, fresh, sexy and modern. How do I do it? I will let the cat out of the bag next time.
Where did you get in touch with ZOEVA the first time?
The first time I got to know and love ZOEVA was at the Berlin Press Day this spring.
What’s your number one favorite ZOEVA product and why?
I have totally fallen in love with the brushes of ZOEVA, they have a high quality and look stylish. Most of all, I love the Rose Golden Collection. Jazz, du hast schon mit einer Menge internationaler Celebrities zusammengearbeitet, unter anderen mit Cynthia Nixon, Sheryl Crow, Tracy Chapman oder sogar Johnny Depp. Welcher Job ist Dir besonders in Erinnerung geblieben?
Die Begegnung mit Tracy Chapman war für mich am beeindruckensten. Ich hatte eine zeitlang die Gewohnheit während des Makeups meine Arbeitsschritte laut zu zählen. Sie lachte sehr darüber und erzählte, ich würde ihrer Schwester ähneln, die das gleiche tun würde. Anscheinend fand Tracy Chapman es so lustig, dass sie im Tempodrom vor tausenden von Fans über mich und meinem Zähltick erzählte.
Was schätzt Du am meisten an Deinem Job als (Celebrity) Makeup Artistin?
1. In ein pures Modelgesicht einen Ausdruck für ein bestimmtes Thema zu malen (für mich ist es eher malen als schminken), ist jedesmal eine schöne Herausforderung.
2. In neuen Räumen/Orten sein. Ich interessiere mich sehr für Interior Design, daher ist es immer wieder bereichernd und interessant zu sehen, wie andere in ihren vier Wänden leben bzw. eingerichtet sind.
3. Celebrities aus der Film-und Musikbranche treffen, mit ihnen arbeiten, sie ein wenig kennenlernen und eine kleine Weile über Gott und die Welt oder auch Nichtigkeiten sprechen oder auch mal zu schweigen. Die meisten, die ich bislang getroffen habe, waren sehr herzlich oder erstaunlicherweise zurückhaltend (positiv gemeint).
Verrätst Du uns Dein persönliches Beauty Geheimnis?
Seit ein paar Jahren versuche ich Zucker zu meiden und trinke neuerdings jeden Tag Bio Wheat Grass. Es macht sich in der Haut bemerkbar und man fühlt sich fit. Rauche nicht und trinke keinen Alkohol (ich mag den Geschmack, aber vertrage es nicht: wie bei vielen Asiaten fehlt mirein gewisses Enzym, das beim Abbau des Alkohols mitwirkt.) Kurz: Ich bin nach einem Becks Lemon Bier so betrunken, dass ich nicht mehr laufen kann.
Es gibt eine Menge toller Frauen auf der Welt. Gibt es eine bestimmte Frau, die du bewunderst?
Ich bewundere alle Frauen, die morgens aufstehen und im Grunde nichts machen brauchen, die vor allem perfekte Augenbrauen besitzen. Ich habe wenig Augenbrauen und muss sie jeden Morgen nachziehen. Was würde ich alles geben für die Augenbrauen von Cara Delivigne.
Wie würdest Du deinen Style in fünf Worten beschreiben?
Schwarz, minimalistisch, streng, lässig, zwischendurch mal Farbausraster im Frühling und Sommer.
Du hast mir vor Kurzem erzählt, dass Du den ‘Glow Effect’ als Deinen Signature Style bezeichnen würdest. Was magst Du besonders am diesem Look und wie kreierst du ihn?
Ich liebe den Glow Effect auf der Haut. Er wirkt cool, frisch, sexy und modern. Wie ich ihn mache, verrate ich Euch ein anderes mal.

ZOEVA Cosmetics habe ich bei den German Press Days in Berlin kennen und lieben gelernt.
Gibt es ein Produkt von ZOEVA, dass Du besonders magst?
Ich liebe die Pinsel von ZOEVA, sie sind qualitativ sehr gut und sehen auch noch dazu stylisch aus. Vor allem liebe ich die Rose Golden Kollektion. Meine Inspirationen hole ich mir von allen Menschen, die ich beim Job oder privat treffe. Ich stöber auch gerne stundenlang auf Pinterest oder auf Instagram.
Wie würdest Du Schönheit definieren?
