Long, long ago in a county on the east side of the state, my future husband – a farm boy – took me home to meet his parents. It was November, and as we drove through the fertile Missouri River bottoms near his family’s farm, we passed a glorious sight: Rombach Farms’ pumpkin patch. Their display was breathtaking: rich and colorful and beckoning passersby to come in and have a little fall fun.
But I was puzzled. “It’s after Halloween. What are people going to do with all those pumpkins?” the city girl asked the farm boy. “They’re for pumpkin pie,” he responded. I gave him my best sophisticated, scornful look – he was a boy, after all – and said “Pumpkin pie comes out of cans.”
He nearly drove off the road laughing. His whole family still laughs about that (yes, of course, he told them – he could hardly wait to tell them).
The patches have changed over time, most offering activities ranging from pony rides to paintball, child-sized trains to amazing mazes. We have a wealth of pumpkin patches throughout the Show-Me State where you can choose from harvested fruit or pick it yourself, and spend a fun day with the kids.
We have corn mazes to challenge the daring.
We have apple orchards with mouth-watering crispness available by the bushel and peck. (I drive two hours one way to my favorite orchard at least once every fall to stock up. I have ALWAYS known where apple pie comes from!)
All these years later, I still love pumpkin patches and everything they stand for: togetherness … abundance … family fun … gratitude … and yes, the innocence of a city girl discovering for the first time that pumpkin pie actually comes from pumpkins.
