Tim Hamlyn is running 310 miles of hilly terrain in aid of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity. Warrant Officer Tim Hamlyn, who serves on board HMS Argyll based at HM Naval Base, Devonport, set himself the challenge – which is the equivalent of 12 marathons in 12 days – to complete a long-held ambition.
Tim says, “I have never run a marathon race, but I have done many half marathons and run big cumulative distances in training and I’m very confident it will be a rewarding experience. I love running off road and the coastal path will be beautiful. I’m just hoping for good weather as that will make a huge difference to my progress.’’
The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity is the principal charity of the Royal Navy. It exists to support sailors, marines and their families, for life. Since 2007, it has funded projects and facilities that boost morale for those who serve today. It also distributes millions of pounds annually to military charities which care for the children, families and veterans of the Naval Service.
As the Executive Warrant Officer on HMS Argyll, the welfare of the crew is his key concern: “because of my job and the work the RN/RM charity does in supporting personnel and their families in need, it was obvious to combine my own challenge giving the charity and beneficiaries a boost.’’
Tim has taken advice from experienced long-distance runners on all aspects of the run, including nutrition as he estimates burning 4,500 calories a day. and thanks the HMS Argyll for its support, allowing him time to train. “I’m lucky to have the full backing of my colleague in the Navy and my family, which is very loyal of them and I will need this in the future when I’m out on the coast digging deep.’’

We support those in care homes who wore a uniform long ago and we support the children of those who have or are wearing a uniform today. Our supporters, like Tim, are incredibly important to us as they enable us to support projects and facilities that boost morale, increase wellbeing as well as make grants to military charities which care for families and veterans of the Naval Service. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for good weather and fair winds for Tim during his 12-day challenge.’’
