Oh, Tallahassee. It truly does live up to its name of “the Tallahassee bubble.” From the raging Seminole pride all over the city to unique apparel of Tallahassee women to the rain cloud that seems to permanently fixate itself directly above the borders of Tallahassee, it truly is a great little place. We have Lake Ella, historical landmarks, the new addition to the bar scene that is Collegetown, thong high-waisted shorts- wait, what? That’s right. The unique apparel of Tallahassee women is something to be recognized, but recently I stumbled upon a new trend that is thong high-waisted jean shorts. While I personally find this new innovation wrong on so many levels (and uncomfortable, geeze), there are a lot of styles native to Tallahassee that are worth noting.

The Crop Top
A favorite among Tallahassee women, a woman in the corporate world would not be caught dead wearing something like this. I, however, have found good use in the crop top when it comes to very sweaty game days and nights out on the town. Everyone has their own opinion of the crop top; while most would compare it to a bra, which it certainly is comparable, there are definitely options to town down the ever-so-scandalous crop top- perhaps a maxi skirt or a sweater with that baby-sized shirt.
While the crop top is a global trend, I think it makes its own special mark here in Tallahassee. In the land of minimal clothing, almost every Tallahassee girl has one in their closet. Call me daring, but after a few (or a few hundred) crunches, I find the crop top to be a great accessory to any closet. You go, crop top!
The High-Waisted… Anything
The opinions of high-waisted shorts are largely similar to those that surround the crop top. Some say “skanky,” Tallahassee women say “staple.” To be worn religiously every game day or dressed up with wedges at nighttime, Tallahassee women love these.
From half bleach to rainbow to having more holes than actually fabric, these come in a variety of shapes and sizes. I’ve definitely made a trip to Goodwill to even make some up of my own! (A Tallahassee go-to, of course).
Leggings (The Best Invention That Humankind Has Ever Made)
Although women of the “real world” might wear leggings under dresses or strictly as gym wear, here in Tallahassee leggings are pants. This might be one of the very few places where wearing leggings out in public is acceptable. Inside the Tally bubble, this skin-tight and comfortable fashion trend can be seen on campus, out to lunch, and even to the bars!
Hey, I have no complaints.
There’s no denying that Tallahassee women like to stand out when it comes to their choice of apparel. One can only wonder, however, what is going to happen to all of us when we venture out into the real world wearing only leggings and a top that looks like we swiped it right off of a toddler. In the unique apparel of Tallahassee women, where less is more, only time will tell!
