ABOUT: The white-breasted nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) is a small songbird of the nuthatch family and forages for insects on trunks and branches and is able to move head-first down trees.

About John

I’m a Graphic Designer, worked 5 years in a studio, and I have my own studio now. I got into photography doing Wildlife and Flower photography with the Audubon about 15 years ago and I do Wildlife and Flower Photography for their magazine and newsletter.

John’s Favorite Equipment for Wildflower and Bird Photography

I learned how to use a camera from back in the film days. I do a lot of travel for Wildlife and Flower photography and have been in the Everglades many times for Wildlife. The types of camera I use are Nikon D3X and D800 and the lens I use for Wildlife are 400mm 2.8 and a 600mm 4.0. For Flower Photography I like the 105mm lens from Nikon and the 24-70 2.8 Lens. I like to use a light tent and when I’m at home I like to do Focus Stacking on Flowers in my studio and blend them together.

The most challenging part of photographing wildlife is to be very patient to get the best shot.

ABOUT: The northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) is a North American bird. Adult males are a brilliant crimson red color with a black face mask over the eyes while females are fawn, with mostly grayish-brown tones and a slight reddish tint on the wings, the crest, and the tail feathers.

Editing with Topaz

To edit my images, I use Lightroom and Photoshop. Then I use Topaz Adjust, Clarity, and Simplify. I have made my own Custom Effect to get the style that I want.

TIGER SWALLOWTAIL BUTTERFLY

The Florida Everglades

The most memorable experience I have was the time I was in the Florida Everglades. A guide dropped me off and gave me GPS Coordinates and I walked 68 miles in 4 days. I met him and he took me back. The wildlife was incredible and it was one of the best times in my life.

ABOUT: The downy woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) is the smallest of North America’s woodpeckers. They mainly eat insects, seeds, and berries.
