Autumn brings with it comfortable temperatures, crisp skies, sunny days and the opportunity to claim a spot on the sand, away from the summer crowds. Best of all, you can find fabulous deals on accommodation and flights; which means more spending money for the important things, like sight-seeing excursions and cocktails by the pool!

1. Cyprus
The hot weather continues in Cyprus during autumn, making it the perfect time to visit this Mediterranean gem. You can take your pick of nature’s finest examples of pristine beaches. Konnos Bay, in Ayia Napa is a crescent shaped shoreline of white sand, colourful umbrellas and turquoise water. In the Akamas Peninsula Nature Reserve, you’ll find the sandy stretch of Lara Bay, surrounded by untouched wilderness.
On the west coast of the island, where a rugged coastline meets country villages, take a dip in the crystal clear waters of Porto Pomos. Nissi Beach, in Ayia Napa is the place to go for beach bars, water sports and fun in the sun, while Aphrodite’s Beach, in Paphos, is the sunset destination for romantic myth seekers.
2. Sardinia, Italy
When you visit Sardinia between September and December, you’ll experience ‘Autumn in Barbagia’, a series of festivals across 28 inland villages, celebrating traditions of food and craftsmanship. As for the beaches, there are literally hundreds to choose from and you simply can’t go wrong.
Poetto Beach, in Cagliari is a wide stretch of sand that offers everything from water sports to surfing and sun-worshipping. La Bombarde Beach, in Alghero is a local favourite, surrounded by pine forests and clear, calm swimming water. Join the rich and famous at Spiaggia Del Principe, in the Costa Smeralda region, for snorkelling in the aqua waters of the bay and go on an adventure to Cala Luna, known as ‘Moon Cove’, which is only accessible by boat or on foot.
3. Andalucía, Spain
Autumn is the best time to visit Andalucia’s spectacular coastline, if only to escape the crowds of July and August. The weather is still exotically warm and the diversity of the beaches means there’s something for every type of holiday.
The coast of Bolonia, which is near Tarifa, is a favourite of kite-surfers, but it also offers Roman ruins, beach restaurants and golden sand with pine-forested dunes. Playa del Cristo is a Blue Flag Beach that’s great for families, with azure water and soft sand. Torremolinos, on the Costa del Sol, is where you’ll find sunbeds, bars and a bustling night scene.
4. Dubrovnik, Croatia
If you’ve been to Dubrovnik in summer, you’ll know that it can be overcrowded and hard to find a patch of sand. Autumn sees the laidback, leisurely side of the city come to the fore, which is perfect for lazy days of swimming and strolling through the charming streets.
Banje is a pebble and sand beach that’s the closest one to the old town. You can rent lounge chairs and parasols during the day and hang around to watch the sunset, as the beach transforms into a nightclub scene. For children, a swim in the shallow bay at Lapad is safe and the area has fantastic facilities. Enjoy sunset views of the Old Town, by trekking down the cliff steps at Sveti Jakov Beach.
5. Rhodes, Greece
All of the Greek islands are stunning in autumn, with warm sunshine and the chance to explore without a throng of summer tourists. Apart from discovering the medieval Old Town in peace, you can catch some rays on some of the region’s most beautiful beaches, in Rhodes.
The village of Lindos combines historical sites with picture-perfect beaches for families, water sports and chilling out in the sun. Visit Ladiko Beach for snorkelling in the cool, blue waters and hang out at waterside tavernas at trendy Faliraki Beach. If you love your water sports, Ixia Beach is a windsurfing mecca and Stegna Beach is the place to sample a real taste of the local culture.
