Walk in most homes in which a child lives and you will inevitably see artwork displayed on the refrigerator and walls. Children are creative and prolific as artists, and they can appreciate the artistic talents of others. DIY Dog Portraits allows kids and families to both enjoy the art of others and create art of their own. In easy-to-follow, step-by-step directions, budding artists are shown how to create works of art much like those of famous artists. And even more of a bonus—the subject of the artwork is a child’s best friend…dogs!

Take, for example, the Paper Collage project.

Paper collage is an expressive, lively, and inexpensive art form. You can use anything from old books and magazine pages to fabric and fancy scrapbooking papers!

The step-by-step directions make it easy for anyone to take a photograph of a beloved dog and get ready to make it even cuter!

This project is not only fun, but works on many important fine motor skills which children need to acquire. There is of course using a pencil, as well as tracing, brush strokes, and cutting.

STEP 5 Once your marker drawing is complete, go through your magazines. Tear out the colors you need for your portrait. For this example, I tore out blues for the background along with oranges, yellows, dark browns, grays, and black for the dog. I also collected pinks for the tongue and greens for the collar!

Look at that—the project even provides practice with color identification and categorizing! While the book mentions magazines, fabric, and scrapbooking papers, another option is tissue paper. Eric Carle, the genius illustrator behind such children’s classics as The Very Hungry Caterpillar and countless more, uses tissue paper to create his well-recognized illustrations. Check out this video (LINK) and you will easily see the similarities between his process and the one employed by this project.

Your child won’t even know all of these educational skills are embedded within the fun projects of DIY Dog Portraits, especially when he or she sees the finished product!
